We are seeing plenty of bass on the beaches now, but many of them are still in that 22-26" size range. We are getting keepers too, but my guess is a 4-1 ratio of shorts to keepers from the beach.
From the boats, it seems there are bigger fish up north, way north, with a few pods of them being found down in our area, but there is a giant pod ( 4-5 miles wide) still hanging off the South Shore of LI.
Blues are mixed in still, and some of the biggest I have seen a couple of years are being caught. Our largest blues weighed in were around 19#. and 21# recently. I have to get some pics up. I know the 19# blue was entered in Jersey Hookers local tourny. ( check it out if your not already in it) Rich runs a great tournament over at his shop) . ;)
The blues are out in deeper water, 80- 90' and there are even bass out there too, but its past the 3 mile line and the CG has been in the area because of reports being called in. DO NOT GET CAUGHT WITH A BASS OUT THERE!!! Even if you caught it inside of 3 miles, you can not take it past that 3 mile line.
Its getting better every day, but by no means is the FALL BITE on right now! Its just the beginning and it will improve! I just wanted to give a quick report, for those who are heading out this weekend. I also wanted to warn you guys about taking a bass past the 3 mile line. They are checking and you just may get caught.
Seems they have some fish down in Seaside too, as I know a few decent fish were weighed in at B&N. You will get them on clams, bunker or metals and we even have a few keepers on pencil poppers last few days too.
Good luck this weekend.... let me know if you guys see any bluefin busting on the bass out there...... thats what I am looking for! :D
