Just got on from a good canyon trip.
Settled up in 100 fathoms by about 9PM last night. Had run-offs immediately --two broke off and two stripped leaders-- never saw them. Quiet for a while after that.
Then, in the dark, we landed an 80lb swordfish. Shortly after that, we landed a huge bigeye; over 6ft and we guessed it to be near 350lbs!
Just around dawn, we picked up a few yellowfin and longfin. Also, a few guys dropped deep for tile fish and caught some nice ones, including a 30lber.
I was reading plenty of good marks on the machine 60 to 120 ft down but they were not biting very well at first.
Then we began to see tuna finning in the slick, so we lightened leaders and weights and began to do battle with mostly lonfin. Most were caught on bait but some on jigs.
Great trip, great weather, good guys on board (too much good food) and the Gambler mates did an excellent job once again.
We have room on Monday's trip and the weather looks good. Don't wait too long to call Mary Ann at 732-295-7569 to reserve.
