Isn't the Mimi a charter boat? Do they run open boats in weekends for tog?

Mimi runs quite a few open trips, check here or the website. The Big Mohawk is a very good tog boat too. Also Norma K, especially if you can make the Monday extended trip.

To answer your original question: I've fished every AH boat that blackfishes and found they will all put you on good bottom so it comes down to personal preferences,Captain, mates, etc. That being said larger fish come from the waters further south and Mimi and NormaK are top notch.

If you are looking for a good blackfish boat in the AH area you have two choices. The Angler - George is as good as they come and the EB-II in the Highlands.
As far as other boats - Kenny on the Mimi works his *ss off to get you some nice Blackfish and its a smaller boat that can get on smaller pieces. The Ocean Explorer is a great boat as well if you are looking for weekends but it will get crowded.
The Big Mohawk is also a great boat that will put you on the fish. I have been on all of these boats and have done well on all of them.
I cant wait!!!

Hey Dennis, long time brother, hope to see you on November! His original post was geared towards boats in the Atlantic highlands/Highlands area, but as it appears we all have had different experiences on different boats along the coast and we all recommend where we've done our best. Like stated earlier, it all depend on personal preference; all the boats mentioned are great boats with great captains and crews and I don't think anyone would argue that point, but if he's partial to the Sandy Hook area, I don't think he'll have a problem finding what suits him.

Totally agree.
Angler, Big Mohwak, Mimi are my go-to boat for togs.

I know you said party boat, but keep a watch for any openings on the Tagged Fish out of the Highlands. For about the price of a party boat, you can jump on a six pack. Chad knows Blackfish and will help you get your limit.

There are many "bottom fishing" captains but only a handful of true "Blackfish Captains". Explore them all and the cream will rise to the top.

So i guess the big recommendation is to take the extra ride further south to Belmar? Is there really a big difference from Highlands to Belmar?

I agree, 150%. Tagged Fish, is the way to go if you're looking to stay around the Highlands.

Yes Belmar boats are way better in my honest opinion, and they don't watch a clock like most do in the Highlands.
If you like back at the dock at the same time all the time whether you started catching fish at the end of the day or not, Highland boats are king!
You want a Captain to keep you out and put the most effort in and actually catch fish, the Big Mohawk is your boat!

I have been on the Angler many times where George has put in OT to put a catch together. I know most highlands boats will watch the clock as they have second trips to make at night.

I go Mimi if I can get on. If not I'm on the Angler. Both are top notch captains and mates. Angler sails every day. It can be tough to get on the Mimi during tog season.

Thanks guys for all the feedback. Looks like I have a handful of boats to choose from. I guess I will just have to give the AH boats a shot this season and if anything I can drive the extra distance to Belmar and Point Pleasant like I used to do. Can't wait for the full limit season to open up!

I think the Palace out of Hoboken is the best blackfish around. If you like older drunk white guys playing cards for $200 a hand in the galley and the relentless smell of diesel fuel this is your boat!!!

Perfect is when you have a great day!Factor in the experience of the anglers on board that day. When blacfishing the ''veteran'' anglers will always out fish the nocice anglers. You have to pay your doos and learn when to swing on a tog.Pegging one boat against another does not help this site and causes hard feelings.Remember fishing is suppose to be fun!

When you can keep 6 tog... On Jan 1 you drop down to 4 tog.
Liberal meaning more, as in liberal amount. :p

I'm still going to hunt Liberals. So let me get this straight soon I will be able to kill 6 per day but in January I can only kill 4 per day? Hmmmmm not enough time before the next election to even the odds but I will give it a shot. Get it shot!! :)

No hard feelings Capt. I fished regularly out of a few boats further south and was looking for advice a little further north between Keyport and Highlands to cut down on my drive. Just looking for advice there's many great sponsor boats on this site.

Last lady in neptune city/BelMar does a great job. Mad Gaffer is also very good. IMO, smaller boats are definitely the better option for tog, unless you are after pool money.

Very, very true! Mad Gaffer, Mohawk and the Mimi... All great boats the difference between the 3 is that the Mohawk and the Mimi are party boats which are very good, but Ray & Billy on the Gaffer offer a more personalized day out for just a little more than what you would pay on the other 2.
