I've been hearing rumors that the Seabass have been feeding on sandeels and jigging has been producing well. Question is, do you use the same diamond jigs used for blues/stripers, what technique is used ie long sweeps or short jigging action, tube or tubeless, teasers, etc? READYYY... SETTT... GO!!

couple years ago we read the sh!t out of em but they would not really punce on clam we caught a few & the were vomitting up sand eels i put on a 1oz ava & proceeded to get hit right away everyone switched up & it wasn't fast & furious but we were catching more then on clam. Long sweeps & short pops worked best

Thanks Joey, with the lack of wind predicted this weekend, looks like the perfect time to give it a shot.

inshore I use t-hex 1-3 oz to jig for them...blue/stripers and sometimes an albie will hit it too.....offshore can use the regular diamond hammered jigs.

Lol you can keep the porgies, i wish the triggerfish would come back in the numbers they were in years past. Sandy really messed up their inshore haunts, esp out of Barny.

I'm heading out in the kayak tomorrow morning from the Long Branch area. If anyone wants to join me, just let me know.
Jon Mueller is out there now and had over (40) a few hours ago.

A few weeks back when the season was closed we were fluke fishing using spros and a gulp teaser and the seabass were slamming the teaser.

Jigs and bucktsils both work great ! We sell blue UV glow bucktails that have won many pools.

The pics are in link above. These sandeels work for everythng that eats sandeels.

Was on the cell phone reading while waiting before, but wanted to say that many guys are using jigs for sea bass now! Anything from a simple Ava Jig ( no tail ) to the fancy stuff like I listed above with the Jetty Ghost Sandeels, these fish will inhale something like this.
Spearing & Sandeels also work as bait too! Seems the larger fish will take the larger baits, such as spearing even smelts! Clam is great, or squid, but you see the mix of small fish with these baits. If you want to target quality fish, go with the jigs and bigger baits!
One last thing we have noticed, is that pink & blue are the two top colors for jigs. Pink starts to change color, depending on your depth. Blue is one of the last colors that are lost in the water. Spent 2 seasons testing this theory and its dead on. Blue jigs seem to crush sea bass in depths of 75-125'/
Just a little info on the topic. OMT made up some sea bass jigs for us recently, and the guys love them! Blue with UV Glow. :)

AVA 17 no tail or red, green or black tail.
Pink fin-s or gulp teaser.
Either they work real well, or you get NO BITES.
Basically you drop it to the bottom, and hop it along, sorta like you would do when you're bucktailing. If the seabass want it, you'll know right away, as they slam the jig when they're willing. With the jigs, we've also caught jumbo porgies, and believe it or not, keeper sized togs on the diamond jigs! Got pics to prove it! See below LOL

I fished on the Ocean Explorer on Thursday for seabass. The fishing was a bit slow fishing with clam. I switched to a Ava 17 without a tail, and started to reel them in. Some guys were using a Ava 27 with the same results, but I found the lighter the jig, the better. Didn't get my limit, but had a great nonetheless.........

Fished a bunch of wrecks over the weekend and tried a bunch of diff jigs in diff sizes, shapes, colors and they didn't want to touch them. Tried all diff baits as well and they only wanted the clam. Will def try again though in the future. May have been the size of the fish as they were mostly smalls with only a handful of keepers.

Anthony, I had success offshore Seabass-ing with the Stingo PBJ 3oz and 5 oz Pink

Get on one of the Offshore trips this upcoming Season. I used a 8oz Gold Hammered jig last year. I caught 12 jumbo's last year onthe jig itself. Fun to catch on the jig.

I caught my full limit of Seabass on an offshore trip last year on the Voyager. I was using a flat sided Shimano butterfly jig and just short snappy jerks on the bottom. I found that the fish need to a little thicker on the offshore trips for the jig to produce and the larger fish were only hitting the jigs. I'm talking those fat Seabass up to 4 pounds and nothing under 2lbs on the jig period!
Inshore I use an ava 27 or smaller with a trevel hook and long sweeps work best. The fish definitely need to be in the mood for the jig.
