We picked at the MONSTER Blues today both on bait & jigs. The MONSTER Blues ranged from 10 to 15lbs.
A few ALBACORE showed up today - I believe it is the first ones of the season.
The GOLDEN EAGLE sails daily for Blues & Stripers at 7:30am and Fri. & Sat. nights at 7:30pm from Belmar Marina in Belmar, NJ.

Tough pick to say the least. Ended up with a few blues and another exotic ...boston blue (pollock). Also got a little luv with a fairly healthy Saturday pool fish.

Are the albacore good eating?

Albies are best served up as shark bait, or sashimi in a way distant second

Inedible... these were slabbed and vacuum sealed for next season's sharking.

If you bleed it right away and put in the ice (treat it same as Tuna), it's a good sashimi. I usually bring 2-3 albies and make good sashimi.
Here is the way I prep.
Once you fillet it, trim the dark meat (don't remove the skin). Then, use a torch to burn the surface like tataki-style.
While put it in the refrigerater to cool down, chop ginger and scallin (onion is good too), and make a sause (mix soy sause and lemon/balsamic vinegar).
Slice the fillet (1/4 in thickness) and put them on the flaf place. Put scalion, ginger, and pour the sause. Wait 10 min in fridge and serve.
The key here is to treat the fish with extreme care.

That's a bonito recipe, the way the sushi bars would serve it years ago before they became scarce. One of my favs. I'm a little dubious about albies coming out the same but braising with the torch gives it a little smokey touch which might make up for some shortcomings of the meat.

Best eaten same day, will last in coldest part of the fridge ca. 2-3 days. Does not freeze well at all, even vacuum sealed. Lot of people might disagree, but we like it. Try one, see for yourself - great fight, fun to catch.
