Interested in a winter project and with the amount of buck tails that get lost fluke fishing I think I have found my hobby.
With Sams buck tails and the unlimited free deer tails from friends who hunt that I can get this may work out.
So i guess I need the fly bench vice, thread, bobbin, epoxy glue, paint, and so forth.
Can anyone recommend some intel on this hobby choice and where to get the basic supplies to start my venture.
I have watched a few you tube videos on buck tail tying and it looks pretty basic.
Questions, do I just spray paint the heads or is the baked on powder coating necessary.
Anyone looking to sell there no longer used equipment?
Any tips, advise, ect. appreciated.
Thx.

Any decent fly shop should have all the supplies you're looking for. fleabay is a good source for powder coat paint and I'm sure NJ Fishing sponsors have it as well. Powder coat is significantly more chip resistant than spray paint. Spray paint will start chipping at the slightest bump or rub. If anything use nail polish, but baking on the powder coat paint is worth it IMO. Also get the thicker, stronger thread since you're not tying size 22 dry flies. Depending on the size of bucktail you'll be tying, make sure the vice can accommodate the hook sizes.

Put the bucktail on in sections, lightly wrap with thread, then spread it around with your finger or thumb, tighten with a couple of wraps, turn to the next section and repeat. Once you've tied in enough, I always hold all the bucktail and flatten it back towards the hook as I do a bunch of finishing wraps. That keeps it from sticking up all over the place. Then I coat the thread with clear nail polish.

Don't go crazy on a Equipment I got all beginner stuff last year and tied over 100 of Sams bucktails and it worked great! The only think I spent decent money on was a fluid bed for the powder paint and t works like a dream! Enjoy and have fun I tied most of mine at 3 am o. Sleepless nights watching rerun NCAA basketball games! It is a a actually very relaxing to do and cool to catch fish on something you made

If you don't mind me asking where and what did you get?
I am thinking basic to start as well and invest accordingly as time goes on.
If I can get away with spending 2-2.50 per completed jig I would be happy.
And oh yea, catching on what you made is a great feeling.
Thx.

Do not overspend on the fluid bed....you can make several for different color paint for pennies/OK a dollar using PVC, fish tank airline, a fish tank air pump and a small regulator....I make my own that work perfect...consider the size of jigs you want to make also, wider tube for bigger oz models.....

I agree with Sharky,,,, so easy to make and cheap. If you need to know the parts needed let me know.
