After all the fluke the lip and I have seen this year we decided to make our first run to the shark grounds. On board with us was Matty C and Rich ( Reel American ). Sharking is a totally different type of fishing but was a blast and I learned a lot. Turned the hook and was greeted with a decent swell. Got set up and the wait began. Mid day we had a shark swim right past matt on the starboard side of the boat. It was huge but we did not hook up. Then a little later we got a runoff but we did not lock up. Right as we were abut to call it quits and head home the most amazing thing i had ever seen happened. We were bringing in all the lines and matt took of one of the rigs and handed it to me and said to wiggle it up and down in the water and watch these little fish swim around it. ( Rig not attached to rod, just in my hand ) As he handed it to me i didn't see them so i kept jigging it up and down right next to the boat not even a foot under the water. After 20 seconds i started seeing these little fish and out of NO WHERE this MAKO STORMED IN and grabbed the bait that was on the hook. All i could do was SCREAM and hold on for dear life. To avoid me getting my hands cut by the wire matt grabbed it and fought this fish a foot from the boat !!!!!!!. The shark thrashed around and spit the hook. Tossed a rod out to him and 10 seconds later the rod started screaming. We were all in shock that he ate the bait we had just tossed to him. We figured he would have left but this time the rod started screaming and we hooked up to him. I fought the same fish that we had next to the boat and had a BLAST. Got the mako to the side of the boat and i was given the option to keep or release my first shark. It was just a keeper and i decided to let him go to live another day. He deserved it. Gave me a memory that i will never forget. That was just a baby compared to others but he still fought like hell. Had so much fun and it was truly a day i would never forget. Especially because we lost steering when we started the boat up to go home. I dont know if i want to see a fluke again... jk ahaha I also caught 3 whiting while we were waiting. Can't wait to do it again, except with steering. :) I will post the pictures of the shark when matt sends them to me. They were on his phone. Opened my eyes to a whole new world.
