Started out at the dock fluking on live snappers. Had 3 15"-16"ers but most hits just maimed the snappers and didn't finish them off, sorta like when stripers play with your bunker. Steamed out to some ultra deep stuff fishing was very good when you weren't tangled. Some strong current plus people who wouldn't get with the program and put some heavy sinkers and not let out 30 feet of line after they hit the bottom. Steady fishing every drop with mixed sized ling. I wound up with 41 ling to 3 1/4lbs(shoulda had 50-55 if I wasn't tangled so much), a 19" throwback cod, an 18" throwback pollack and a 16" throwback flounder. Pool was a 4lb ling caught by a group of three rental rod fisherman that had 47 overall. Regular Steve (insert Polish name) had 39 ling and his wife came out for a ride with him today. Captain TB's son had 26 ling and now doesn't suck nearly as bad as he did a few weeks ago. Back at the dock, very little fluke bite, had a 15"er and quit after 20 more mins with no bite.

Respectable catch, but when you have

and struggled with this and dropping to ~ 200 ft (guessing deep) and get snagged immediately can be, well

10-12oz with heavy braid, mono more like 12 to 14 if you are using 40lb.

Heavy older st. croix that I customized with a cork tape extended handle, diawa saltist 30, 65lb braid. Not very sporting for ling but it handles heavy sinkers well so it is actually more comfortable to fish than some of my lighter rods which feel overloaded with 12oz and up. Ideally I like to fish my 12-20lb contour rod with 30lb braid but that rig taps out at 8oz and the old shimano reel on it is too slow for water much over 150.

Thinking about changing up to my older st. Croix as well. The lighter rods start to bother my wrists as fter as few dozen fish.
Got out Wednesday had good results with over 60 ling in the cooler.( two guys) Was holding with 10 oz. We had a large hammerhead taking some floating ling and a whale breaching. Awesome conditions flat as a pancake, sunny, breeze. Want to mention the chartuse gulp with the tail worked well. Missed the pool and a small cod took it . Didn't see any dogs, trigger, cbass.
Had a few eels and saw one jumbo bluefish. Great day

How do you string the gulp onto the hook?

Just stick the hook into the head of the gulp and thread it on until it lies flat with the hook exposed. As for wrist pain, it may be your reel handles. Bigger knobs and well designed handles keep your wrists from breaking while you are reeling up.
