In the last week or so i had the pleasure of meeting Captain Evan Millas who owns and operates "Head Hunter Sportfishing". I had been admiring his beast of a sportfishing vessel called the HEAD HUNTER from a far.....but was recently invited aboard both of his vessels "HEAD HUNTER" and the "SCRAPPER".
I quickly realized that Capt. Evan was on to something very special in the Sport Fishing industry with his 2 commercial yet for "charter" Vessels.
He is already considered a very successful commercial Bluefin Captain at a very young age....he has learned from some of our local greats and has perfected his abilities by paying a very high level of attention to detail, and takes great pride in his boats and abilities, but is yet one of the most personable laid back Captains you will ever come across!!
He is a Family man first which is rare in this day in age of sportfishing and is very proud of that part of his life.
He has fished in almost all of the famous fishing destinations on the East Coast....but most importantly has perfected his abilities to capture tuna up to and including 1200 pound Giant Bluefin.
His abilities with all Pelagic fish is at a very high level. He takes great pride in the way he prepares and fishes for Big Game! And already has many many incredible catches to his credit.
This past Saturday he invited me and a couple of my old regulars Mark and Will from my chartering days. And we shoved off @130am early yesterday morning for a bluefin fun trip on his SCRAPPER and arrived to our first destination @400am we took a look around for about 30 min. and moved onto where the bluefin had been getting caught but things did not look to great. He explained to us that his network of commercial Cappy's have been doing well on small to medium yellowfins in a particular inshore structure so he pointed the bow of his SCRAPPER towards that destination...when we arrived there was life all around but tuna life was scarce, but he gave it a valiant effort only to come up empty in the fishbox. Captain Evan began by swinging for the fence but knew that if he failed he had the luxury of back tracking to the now very well known inshore spot....which we did, arriving at 300pm
almost 9 hours after our first destination and 14 hours after our departure!
I quickly realized that Captain Evan does not blink at putting the time in to get a great catch in the box!!
When we arrived at our final destination the fleet of boats from the day had begun to thin out.....what a score that was.....we now had very little competition, and the area almost to ourselves.
Captain Evan proceeded to tango with the bluefin and put 6 out of 7 bluefin all under's in the boat. But we kept one fatty A VERY NICE 46 incher for the table.
Me, Mark and Will watched Captain Evan do what ever it took to put a great catch together!!!!! And indeed he did!!!
I am proud to announce that I will be aiding Captain Evan with bookings of his 2 incredible vessels for Local Tuna, Fall Stripers and North Carolina winter Giant Bluefin!!! And occasionally sailing with this fine and upcoming Tuna Master!!!
We are quickly putting things together and will be ready for charter by Friday of this weekend!!
