It's baaack - - http://www.keyportonline.com/filestorage/53/Snapper_contest_2013.pdf
(on Saturday 24-August - it's free and so is the bait & parking, good place to go Crabbing too). Suggestion - - Bring some clams or worms, the Croakers/Spots are EZ to catch, & there's a bait shop one block away from the pier.
All registered kids get free prizes (tackle). Age division winners get rods & reels. American Legion also gives away Hot Dogs and Water bottles to all registered kids. Definitely a fun event for your future sharpies :)

Are there any snappers in Keyport yet? The kids fishing contest only a few days away.

Props to Cancun Pete, proprietor of OUR sponsor Atlantic Bait & Tackle. When Pete read this post he sent me a Private Message telling me to pick up a rod/reel setup that he has set aside to donate to one of the winning Snapper Derby youngsters.
Pete is too modest to toot his own horn, so I'll do the honors: whether it's an RFA fund-raising trip or Snapper Derby or Washington DC Fisherman's March, Pete is ALWAYS in our corner. It's a privilege to have you as a friend and sponsor :)

My boat is in Sewaren. Is there any slip available in Keyport near to Kids Snapper Contest? This way kids can have short boat ride from Sewaren to Keyport and back. Any information is highly appreciated.

I tried to catch some two weeks ago at Atlantic Highlands to use as Fluke bait and couldn't catch a single one!
I had one or two hits and that's it. Are they getting too smart for the Kastmaster?

Just got home alittle bit ago. My family had a great time and look forward to doing it again next year. I appreciate what the sponsors have set up for the little ones. My 6 yr old caught a 8 inch spot 10 minutes before it started so that gave me a good feeling. They allowed spot and croakers in the contest too. Which was good cause she mostly caught spot and one croaker, but the right croaker. 9.5 inches and good enough to win 6-10 yr old group. Prize was a Daiwa rod/reel combo. Nice! Thank you! Caught the fluke just after contest ended.
Even my littlest got a toy fishing rod. She just stared at the spot and enjoyed banging and whipping the rod around.

Had a great family fun time. Many thanks to the organizers and to the NJ fishing member who posted the flyer. My 7 years old had a blast catching a lots of fish, small snappers and spots(double header). It was our first year at Keyport kids snapper contest and my daughter is already talking about next year. My lack of awareness of contest rules when we reached the measuring table after the contest ended the fish was already dead and they needed live fish to be measued and recorded(I think we had a good chance to win;-). I think every kid got some gift, mine got a fishing rod/reel combo. I saw lots of happy kids there. Overall we got 15 fish, not bad for a couple of hours of hard work;-) We came back tired, happy and with lots of stories to tell until year.

Awesome pics, great memories, and looking forward to next year with "baited breath". I'm thrilled your kids had a ball and I know you all can't wait to use that new equipment together - PRICELESS :)

Keyport was a town devasted by Sandy, as were all along the Bayshore! I hope everyone enjoyed the free tournament, I also hope all at least made an attempt to help the local economy!

What a great event. I brought my 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 olds. The 3 yo caught an 8.5" spot which put him in a 3 way tie for first. But he was just excited to catch something.
