I got a chance to head down to Venice LA to fish with my old buddy Scott..... He has a classic 36 Contender with newer Verados and I have to tell you it’s still a great riding hull. Ok back to the fishing I have never been down to Venice and I have to tell you i will be going back over and over again. What an incredible place oil rigs has to be one of the funniest ways to fish, they are such an unbelievable piece of structure that holds so many different species of Fish from Tuna to Snapper to wahoo to grouper. We fished two days one focusing on Tuna and the other focusing on bottom fish. We were fishing Riggs about 30 miles out of the pass using live hard tails(small blue runners) for the tuna and we managed 3 fish to about 125lbs which is my biggest Yellowfin to date. While fishing livies I chunked out some bonitas I jigged up earlier and we had a school of mahi come in, in the 20lb range. Now to my favorite part day two we went bottom fishing for Grouper because red snapper is still closed so all fish had to be vented and released, but for us northern guys imagine seabassing but the sea bass averaged 25 to 35lbs and you never knew what you would haul up. It was incredible we caught 8 grouper up to 30lbs and i lost count of how many snapper of all kinds that we caught. Venice is truly an amazing place i recommend it highly.......

oh yeah and i forgot the AJ's here are beasts they broke a lot of tackle!

Wow, some great work there.

I got to tell the wife that we need to sit on a boat in Venice together. How will I get her to leave the passports home!

Never been but on my Bucket list too.... Have some friends who fish there and say it's the best kept fishery secret in the US.

Great trip and great photos... Thanks for sharing them here.

we bait fished and jigged them, the locals seemed to think we wouldnt be able to jig them but the hammered diamond jig pulled through again........

Definately a bucket list fishing trip, just gotta fine the other 5 guys to go!!! if you ever need to fill in a charter, well.........you know where to find me!!! I have even thought of just driving down in an RV and parking there for a week, allowing for any bad weather days.

Maybe a little research, a little planning and a road/air trip in order for a few guys from the board who want to cross this off their list?:)

Nothing quite like fishing a wreck that "sticks" out 100' above the surface of the water. The longer it's been the the better it is. Good stuff not limited to Venice, LA. Fish the GULF!
