Went on a double overnighter Cod trip out of Montauk.

I drove out early and fished the Miss Montauk. Fishing was on the slow side for keepers. I got a bunch of shorts and rays but no keepers. 2 other buddies each got one keeper apiece. They invited me to partake with them at Wok and roll, where they expertly cooked up the catch for us for dinner.

We left at 7 PM on Sunday night and took a 12 hour steam.

Insane cod bite all morning until about 1 PM and then it turned into a steady pick. I started with bait, which produced a bunch of nice 10lb class fish. I switched to a hammered diamond jig with a single hook and jelly teasers and continued to bring up nice fish. My biggest was about 15lbs. Reefsquater from this board and I combined for about 35 keepers, plus another 6 or 7 from my dad. He kept dropping fish after he hooked them but there plenty in the box so it was no big deal.

At one point I put my jigging rod in the holder to help my dad dehook a fish. When I took out my rod out of the holder I felt fish on the line. I deadsticked 2 keeper Cod on the jigging setup! :D

A bunch of 20 lbers caught and the pool fish was a 30# Cod. There were also some large White Hake caught. No keeper Pollack but I did catch a short and saw a few other shorts around the boat.

It was hot as blazes on the water and we fished until sundown. Mates cleaned fish until about 1 am as we steamed back towards Montauk. We anchored up on some open bottom until daylight so the crew could get some much deserved rest and the area was full of life. The area around the boat was teeming with squid and small bait fish. I was beat but one of the guys fished for squid and landed 50+ squid.

We worked our way back to Montauk and hit a number of spots. The fishing around Coxes Ledge and Block was a lot slower for me and my group. We got 2 keepers on Day 2. We were fishing smaller pieces and with the drift and the size of the boat (140') the bow had a lot better action, but the trip was already a success for me and I didn't really care if I got any more fish. Dogfish were a nuisance on the second day. Sculpin and Bergalls picked at the bait on all the stops.

I also met AndrewOTB from this board, as well as BlackfishDoug's brother Dennis. Both are great guys.

I got home around 9:30 last night and have a lot to do when I get home from work tonight. I will try to post some pictures.

chefsam- That is the one. That is the only boat that makes the Big Jamaica seem small

Travisboy- Are you George M from back home?

JMuir- Day 1 we fished the Wrecks about 50 miles South of Nantucket. Runor had it that one of the drops was on the Andrea Doria.

Here are a few photos that the guys took

John,
GREAT TIME!!!!!!!!
Nice meeting you, your Dad and Bob.
Pictures do not do this trip justice!!!
First day we could have stopped fishing by mid morning, of course we did not.
Not may fish had to be measured. I had enough that my fishing partner (Rob) were throwing back keepers to grow more.. As stated Bob was on fire. Thank God he cooled down a little to let some of us in the stern catch some of the 15-20lb fish he was decking.
Thanks for pictures and nice meeting you,Dad and Bob.
Hope to fish again soon!!
Andrew

Was an epic trip for sure, Andrew, nice meeting you as well, even though stole my mojo in the afternoon and slayed them (lol)
John consistently swung in the cod and put a hurting on the coolers all trip long.

This is the second year this trip has produced big numbers. Great people and great operation.

Congratulations on a nice safari, I'm sure you know the bow swings off the wreck less than the stern. Either way I'd rather have been you this week than me.

Yes, and those big cod slowly swim around venturing well outside of the wreck. Stern was the place to be first day on the deep. Lock and load.

We were drifting the entire trip. I had enough at this point so it wasn't an issue. If my box was light I would have moved bu I didn't care.
