Water Temp: 69-73
Tide:Outgoing/Slack
Water Clarity: Shitty to OK
Bait: Squid/Spearing/Bucktail
Beer: Amstel Light/Miller Light
Air Temp: HOT AS HELL
Couldn't sleep. Mind doing a mile a minute - so hopped out of bed and got ready for some fishing.
Got to the boat, loaded up the gear and took a quick ride to the reach area. Good drift, nice conditions...zero fish.
I worked areas of the reach from 20 feet to 50 feet in the middle of the channel. NOTHING. By Noon it was hot as hell and was ready to call it a day. But my wife specifically told my to come home with fish - or don't come home. So I did some digging. A quick stop at the TC Buoy produced zero.
Made my way to the Hook. As we approached slack tide that's when I started catching. I worked the Beach on the west side of the hook (beach facing the navy pier) and drifted from about 33 feet to 18 feet. Area was tight to the beach but that's where I found them. Limited out in 3 hours. The flies were killing me but I kept the focus. Busted my ass until about 3:15 and called it a day for the ride back to Morgan.
5 fish up to 3 lbs.
Decent action just wish I got there earlier.
My experience this year has been not a very good bite during the tide - but the hour leading up to the very end - into the beginning of slack have produced most of my fish. Dragging bait has done well, but I have been using a spro job tipped with squid and a teaser above that with a spearing on a plain hook as well. That setup just being dragged/bounced on the bottom has produced my bigger fish - while the plain jane bait dragger has produced quantity/action.
The back bay is done. Nothing going on and way too hot.
Saw a lot of boats by the old orchard lighthouse area (what's left of it) fishing the debris. What are they catching there? Sea Bass? Porgy?
Curious as I have not been over there to check it out. I fish by myself a lot and am a little nervous about that area.
Tight Lines - more fishing to come - hopefully more reports.
