Canyon Runner
07-09-2013, 06:26 AM
A long week stuck at the followed was followed by a string of fishable days but not exactly flat calm. We’ve fished every day since last Wednesday in the canyons only taking Sunday night off as it was just too rough of a forecast and for the most part slower fishing that with a rough forecast there was no reason to push it. That said – we got 7 overnighers in in just a few days and had a couple of stellar catches adding our 9th and 10th big-eyes of the season and a 650# blue marlin.

We caught 10 big-eyes already this season and our new 12” Canyon Runner Squid Bars and Yellow Greem Machine Bars have accounted for many of them.

Not to mention - our new Canyon Runner dredges have been so productive I have the crews now fighting over who gets the electric LP reels and who doesn’t on each trip. I have 2 more on order from LP right now to avoid the fights – can’t get them soon enough. HaHa! We’ve actually had a couple of these big-eyes blow right through the dredge knocking it out of the water then turn and pile on lure that was trolled right above or alongside the dredge. If you haven’t added these 12” Canyon Runner Squid Bars or these dredges to your arsenal you are missing out – we’ve been using them for 2 years now and they have proven deadly on the big-eyes and all other tunas for that matter. Check them out at www.canyonrunner.com and get yourself a pair.
Reports:
48 Viking – 7/3-4 – No Tunas a few Mahis
We took out 6 of Americas finest out on our annual FREE Military Veterans trip and they didn’t get what they deserved as the fishing was not what is was the last time we had gotten out over a week prior. It was heart breaking is the Vets on the 48 Viking only had a couple bites and didn't catch any tuna fishing all over the Hudson Canyon. They had some mahis and we were going to extend the trip and do another day of sharking and bluefinning but there were a couple guys sick so the group decided to head in early.
60 Ritchie – 7/3 – 3/11 on Yellowfin
Capt. Mark was on the 60 Ritchie with the Stanley Wyka charter and ran to the Hudson as the water to the south was off the bank in 1000 fathoms and we never catch tuna when the water is that deep. The Hudson looked good - whales, nice water, birds - tons of bait. Capt. Mark had 11 solid hook ups but due to several issues only brought 3 yellowfin to the boat - they were better quality fish and a couple that were lost were in the 60-75 class (one was actually right next to the boat so we knew the size).
48 Viking – 7/4-5 – 1 Yellowfin and Mahis
Capt. Mark and Dean took the 48 Canyon Runner for an open boat trip Thursday to Friday and not for the lack of effort as they covered the entire Hudson Canyon they only came up with 1 Yellowfin and a few mahis.
48 Viking – 7/5-6 – 2 Yellowfin/2 Longfin
Capt. Mark and Capt. Dean had the Jeff Coleman charter out Friday to Saturday and picked away at fish in the Hudson pulling 2 yellowfin in the 30 pound class and 2 longfin in the same class. They saw great life at the tip and pulled a couple fish there but it wasn’t enough to stay – they worked the entire canyon out to the deep finding the best water deep and a couple longfin out of it.
60 Ritchie – 7/5-6 – 2 Big-Eyes, 8 Longfin, 2 Yellowfin

Capt. Phil Dulanie was back at the helm with Capt. Craig Angelini in the pit and Capt. Phil found the fish. Fishing in the Hudson Canyon again in the only clean water close to home he picked 2 yellowfin 30-50 pounds early and then went on the hunt as the signs went away. Trolling way off the bank he found the cleanest water we’ve seen in a while with flyers and blue water and within an 1 hour had 2 big-eyes on the deck and 5 longfin. The big-eyes were 115 & 140 pounds. The night bite saw a ton of blue sharks but not much else and the more troll saw a 3 banger of longfins to finish out the trip. Canyon Runner Big-Eye and Yellowfin Runners and Jets accounted for many of the longfin as well as mini-Green Machine bars.
48 Viking -7/6-7 – Slow Fishing
The slow fishing in the local canyons is really settling in with most of our trips like this one. The crew worked hard all day and all night for the Ed Huss charter but could not pull a fish out of the Hudson.
60 Ritchie – 7/6-7 – 1 650# Blue Marlin, 1 Mako, 1 Yellowfin, 1 Longfin
Capts. Dean Lambros and Craig Angelini were running the 60 Ritchie on Saturday to Sunday with the Anthony Heath charter and found the first blue marlin we’ve heard of this year in our area. Fishing between the Hudson and the Dip out in the deep after nailing a longfin and a yellowfin and a mako at night Capt. Dean found some great water on the chloryphll charters and worked that area only for a short time when the big blue showed up. I believe it ate a Canyon Runner Green/Yellow Big-Eye runner but that’s only from the picture Dean sent me as he’s still offshore and I didn’t get a full report. Nice job Dean on your first blue marlin that you captured as Captain.
