While I am not an advocate of killing bigger game fish, that is one I would keep. That fish has been around a long time. That is one for the wall and table.

There have been unofficial records of cod over 200lbs being caught as well.

Thats one serious Cod man!!! I would have had a nervous breakdown seeing that monster coming up

Question...

Ive heard that if the rod touches the rail or if someone else touches the rod or is otherwise involved in the landing of the fish the IGFA may not aknowledge the record...is that true? Could they give him a hard time about the record??? Either way it's a catch of a lifetime and he should be proud.

I think the IGFA records are for line class ( tackle ) so he could have the heaviest cod ever caught.

I can't even imagine one that big! I could see myself telling the mate "don't fillet it yet...I just want to look at it a little longer :D

He's deff gonna need a bigger frying pan!

The IGFA have 15 pages of rules for a record catch they can be found in their International Angling Rules Publication
__________
The following acts will disqualify a catch:
1. Failure to comply with equipment or angling regulations.
2. The act of persons other than the angler in touching any part of the
rod, reel, or line (including the double line) either bodily or with any device,
from the time a fish strikes or takes the bait or lure, until the fish is either
landed or released, or in giving any aid other than that allowed in the rules
and regulations. If an obstacle to the passage of the line through the rod
guides has to be removed from the line, then the obstacle (whether chum,
floatline, rubber band, or other material) shall be held and cut free. Under
no circumstances should the line be held or touched by anyone other than
the angler during this process.
3. Resting the rod in a rod holder, on the gunwale of the boat, or any
other object while playing the fish.

You would need two of those just to make an appetizer large enough to satisfy your in-laws.
