Good conditions with an incoming tide and light easterly breeze had the bite turned on right from the start today! Doc, Anchor Joe, Eddie, Richie, Eddie and several other Monday regs made their first trip today to be rewarded with a very good bite on fish up to 20 lbs!! Rich Appert, PA took his second pool in two weeks with another fish that made 38 inches, 20 pounds!
Limits all around for a great bunch of guys who didn't listen to the weather man. Picks and Video tell the rest of the story.

Don't wait too long, the bite is on now!!

PLEASE, I'm begging you if you do fish with us, leave the braid at home! Nothing but major problems the past few days with the current and tangles that keep Myself and the crew tied up messing with that crap while the bite is on. Thanks.

Amen with reference to the braid.

Can't even begin to describe the amount of problems it caused on Sunday.

Hi guys - thanks for the reports and posts!

Most of my reels are filled with braid and have been for years now. It seems like forever since I fished with mono. I've only fished a couple of times on party boats as I mostly go out on charters or with friends on their boat. Are there certain species (fluke) or times of the week that braid is OK on the party boat or should mono always be used?

I'll convert one of my spinning reels to mono for an upcoming trip - thanks for the advice.

Why leave the braid at home? I exclusively fish with braid as mono just doesn't do the job as well as braid does.

For party boat fishing, I use braid on all my conventional setups for bottom fishing; fluke, blackfish, etc. It's just up and down reeling with those species. When fishing for blues, stripers and other fish that are all over the place when hooked up, can't beat mono when the lines get tangled. Just my two cents.

I've used braid plenty of times on party boats and especially on the fishermen and I never had a problem. I agree it could become a pain especially to those fishermen out there with not so much experience.

It's not only a pain to fisherman without much experience but to those with experience as well. I lost easily 30 + minutes (between untangling, re-rigging etc.) of fishing time because my line (mono) became entangle in braid knots by so call inexperienced fisherman using braid.

Capt. Ron correct me if I'm wrong, you allow braid for fluke fishing just not for striper fishing.

I guess you don't take out the tangles that you cause. You would under stand if you got your finger caught in the braid tangle when the guy with the braid decides that you are a fish and swings & tightens the braid around your finger almost cutting it off. Has that happen last week & when you cut the line to get your finger out you hear "hay why did you cut my line". I'll bet you let the mates handle your tangles "because they are so much better at it than I am".

It doesn't matter if you had no problems , when a Capt. asks me to use mono then thats what I do . I guess that you don't respect Capt. Ron enough to heed his advice . We were up there Sunday by Capt. Ron. Between the current and the wind we swung quite a bit . Guess who was out of the water the most/caused the most tangles ? Your credibility just went down the toilet by questioning one of the Best Striper Captains in the Fleet.

Braid can also get caught in running gear and since it's so abrasive it can do damage to shafts, bearings etc.

I didn't question him. I asked him why it was different then using mono. Maybe some of you guys should learn to read.

Your credibility went down the toilet when you didn't read what I originally said. I asked what the
Difference was. And
Yes I have used braid
Plenty of times with out the problems that you guys speak of. Maybe
I have just been lucky that the days I have gone out the boat was not spinning causing these suck tangles
That you speak of. Now stop worrying about bashing someone and just shut up and fish!

I never said it's not allowed, and I wouldn't keep a paying customer off the boat because of it, that would be a stupid business decision. I'm just asking for a little common sense when fishing with a boat load of people for Striped Bass.
Many of the customers who do know how to fish it, don't have a problem and are not the ones I am singling out......I like everyone else have to be POLITICALLY CORRECT in this department.:D

Most of the Fluke bucktail guys are using it with great results, hell I use it myself....Guess the frustration of the weekend got the better of me.

You keyed one line . I commented on that . What makes you think that I'm worried ? I do shut up when I fish (most of the time) .

even if you do know how to fish, you get that one clueless guy who THINKS he knows how to fish and has braid on and can't control his fish. I've had my line cut countless times by someone with braid on trying to fight a bluefish, sometimes when I had a fish on too and it took all i had not to pop the guy for being stupid.

it's just a courtesy to the mates who have to untangle the lines when a fish wraps up 10 people, some who have fish on that are pulling, and their fingers could potentially get wrapped by the braid which then becomes a potential slicing weapon.

it's really bluefish, especially at night, and stripers where most captains prefer braid to not be used. i'd add albies and bonito to that too. up-and-down bottom fishing boats rarely say anything, but it's still a good suggestion to have a mono or flouro leader for when that seabass backs into the rocks and gets you snagged. a boat moving fast on a drift, with an angler's braid stuck to the bottom can become dangerous too and hard to break. Reels and rods break or the line gets cut and the angler can lose most of the spool. i always check with the crew first because they are the guys doing it everyday and they have a story or situation from every instance you can possibly imagine. :D

"Im coming out on Friday. I'm fishing 100# test Power Pro with no top shot. Im fishing with 80# test leader & a 2oz sinker. I got a 10ft surf stick & a giant ass spinning reel. When the sinker hits the bottom, i'm gonna pay out 300 yards of line to get myself in the zone."

And use the spinner with the reel facing up. Works better that way, you get more leverage

Plus you do not need no stretch for bite detection with stripers and mono's stretch is your friend when a large fish surges quickly.
