well, with the good reports and better weather decided to ride the waves today. Met my friend (who was 45 minutes late) at Atlantic bait and tackle to load up on provisions. late start and in the water at 8:30. rang up the grape vine to find out the bite was not in the same spot it's been, so of for a ride to the ocean. Anchored up and had a slow pick. Stuck with this for a while, caught a couple of keepers but not enough action for me. Heard from my buddy that there was a bite in the bay, so off I went. Anchored up for another slow pick. Then I got slammed by a freight train that peeled a ton of drag! fought the beast for a while and landed a nice 20 pounder! thanks for the call to move back in (you know who u are)!
Ended the day with a total of 6-7 fish caught including the piggy. the other guys with me were not so experienced and caught a couple a piece.
Now for the crap news. On the way into keyport I hit something in the MIDDLE of the channel and sheered off 1/2 of a prop blade:mad:, the thing was only two weeks old! I don't think I did any other damage, but I will be picking up ANOTHER prop tomorrow! Be careful out there, I guess I have the honor of the first casualty!
Back at it Sunday with my son.

Nice fish and report Steve, thanks for sharing it! Sorry about the prop. I fear we may be hearing a lot of that this season.

Thankfully it was "just" a prop. Glad everyone's safe and you can still smile about a good day's fishin' :)

Jeff, didn't mark the spot (I'm an ass). But was right in the river. If heading out it was in the neighborhood of that tall pilling just after the docks to starboard. I came in at dead low the water was very skinny. I am sure that was a factor (moon tide?).
Call me for more details if needed.

Steve,
We had an issue a few years ago where after we pulled the boat we noticed a crack on two blades on one prop. I'm sure you know this but just in case you don't you can have that blade fixed and keep it on board as a spare. I don't recall who we had service ours but it came back looking good as new. I don't think the cost was that bad relative to the cost of a new prop. Something to consider if you haven't already.

Thanks Steve.. I have a rough idea where you are talking about.. The people were just in that area picking up all that crap they have stacked on the browns side.. wonder if something came free when they were moving it..

Steve, Ocean Propeller Route 37 in Toms River NJ( Not far from Bay bridge on East Bound side) does great work. Had a damaged prop similar to that and the made it good as new...@ $100

You and your crew made it back safe - that is all that counts - props can be replaced and fixed - yeah it sucks but you guys made it back OK , use it as a spare.
Be careful out there everyone - going be a lot this year -

Aluminum = broken prop = $
Stainless = broken lower unit = $$$

Sorry to hear about your prop Shrimpman. I changed over to an aluminum prop this year on my 200HP Yamaha. I think the aluminum will sacrifice it's self and lessen the CHANCE OF damage to the motor vs. the Stainless Steel prop. Also happy to pay BoatUS / Seatow insurance this year. I'll be slowing down a lot, and marking any problems I see. Also keeping the go to phone numbers for the CG, and DEP on board to report GPS Coordinates where I drop a marker.

Bummer about thr prop :( glad it didn't happen on the way out :) like I said the boat ( AKA the dirty shrimp lol Doug) can catch some fish. Great job catching Shrimpman. It's just boating nothing you can do,minimal loss I hope but hey your Fishin and catching. It doesn't get any better then that. Oh did I thank you for taking me fishing last week?

SHirpman spin the prop and see if the prop spins straight with no wobble at all, a bent prop shaft will be a pain.
Good luck! :)
