Love this Site. My favorite PB growing up was the S.S. Miss Belmar. At the time it was the boat to be on esp when the blues were only biting on Barnegat Ridge. Made that long run much shorter back in the 70's and 80's.

Way back in the day there were lots of fishing charters (6 packs) out of Brielle and Point Pleasant as well as the party boats. Stop by Eloise's in Brielle next to the post office to see some of the old pictures. Union Landing Restaurant also has pics of the old days. Those were the days when fish were plentiful and the electronic technology was only a twinkle in an engineer's eye. Very few fishermen had ever seen a spinning reel no less monofiliment line. Offshore fishing trips to the exotic Hudson Canyon were done by small retired navy vessels and communication back to the mainland was done by carrier pigeons. It was a time before the foreign (mostly Russian) trawlers scooped up the whiting and ling and cod and mackerel to a point where they have yet to recover. They were the days when you could read the morning and evening papers and find out what was biting and who caught what. Duffy and Schaeffer were household names. Oh yes, they were the days before size limits and quotas and government intervention. It was subsistence fishing for most families and there were lots of captains who were willing to accomodate them. Boat captains were hard-pressed to make ends meet but they were the pioneers of a form of recreation that we all love thanks to their early efforts and legendary boats.

I was born in '53 and my first memory of fishing the raritan bay was aboard my Uncle Dave Faber's party boat the Flying Saucer out of the highlands. I guess I was probably around 7 or 8 so that would be around '60. We were fluking in the bay and I remember being sick and a little scared. But it never stopped me from coming back ! He sold the flying saucer 1 and got a bigger flying saucer 2 and the story that I heard was that the flying saucer 1 and 2 ultimately both ended up moving south. Dave lived right below the lighthouses and I also remember hiking up to them from his house and thinking that he was the luckiest guy on earth. He didn't have any kids so the line ended with him. Does anyone remember the flying saucer or Capt Dave Faber ?
