2-23 Offshore Sea Bass Report
Saturday offshore fishing was excellent once again. Everyone on board caught their limit of Giant sea bass and many also caught their limit of Jumbo Porgies.
We started fishing early and began to pick at the sea bass right away. As the sun rose fishing improved and there were more porgies in the mix. There were also a few ling and a couple of Pollock landed.
The pool winners were:
Walter Pacreuski from South Amboy NJ with a 10LB Pollock,
John Dertouzos from Hamilton NJ with a 6.5LB Sea Bass.
A few of the anglers on board today asked the deckhand what they could do to try not to catch the fish as quickly. They actually fed their line out slowly (like you would for bluefish) and were getting bites when they were only 100’ down. (We were fishing in 190 feet of water).
There are loads of Sea Bass and Porgies on all of the offshore wrecks. The fishing has not shown any sign of slowing down so we should have excellent fishing on our remaining trips. The last day of the season is February 28 so we have scheduled trips sailing every night at 11PM to take advantage of this great fishing.

Fished the Big J Saturday, got set up on the first wreck (or whatever these sea bass hang on) by 4 A:M. I had a tough time getting started in the darkness, but soon found myself digging into the clam pot after every drop to the bottom. Bites occurred the instant your bait hit the bottom and some real nice sea bass and dinner plate sized porgies came up in the dark. I was surprised the bass were running that strong in the dark, but that was probably a blessing in disguise as the wind started to howl by 11:00 when we headed in with pretty much a consensus boat limit of sea bass and plenty of those porgies to top off the coolers. Nary a trash fish to speak of either. I've had a very fortunate string of good sea bass trips these last two months. Went 3 for 3 with no weather-outages. Finishing off on the Big J in style, I slept good on the way in in my sleeping bag down below. That is definitely the way to fly on this boat, nice heated bunk space in the dark!;) :D

Richie, As fast as I get the bass home, I end up eating a bunch right away and giving some away. My neighbors all love me and my friends at work think I'm crazy, but they love me too when I hand them a bag of fillets.;) I will get to keep most of this pile though as I have fed everybody I wanted to by now.
btw,Those sea bass rigs worked out real nice Richie, and I only lost 2 to the sea before the end of the day.:D I went with the 3 hook setup mostly, and those 6/0 baitholders brought up some real nice porgies along with the 4 lb avg sea bass.

After enjoying a nice Sunday dinner of sea bass sauteed in olive oil, salt, pepper, lemon and wine, I bagged up the remaining sea bass into 4 and 5 pc bags. ended up with 12 bags and 2 whole fish that me and my buddy Archie want to do salt-encrusted. I know Leif posted a recipe somewhere, I'll look it up.

Pabeerguy, nice going on the catch. I was out on the Big J thursday/friday trip. Easily limited out on Seabass and porgys. Though I didn't keep my limit of porgys. I threw a ton back that where not big ole slobs. When I got home Friday night from the trip, I spent 2.5 hours cleaning and vacuum sealing all the fillets. We hit two wrecks and I'm sure we didn't have to for people to limit out. Excellent fishing these season.

Blkbear, Now what are we going to do after sea bass closes end of the month?:( I'm spoiled rotten. Need more drop and reel action. Not much to look forward to far awhile.

Hey Dan, sounds like you had a good offshore season. Too bad its ending. Now to get your mojo up for the blackfishing next fall :D

I want to master that fish bad Bill. But after seeing some of the best blackfish fishermen be humbled often enough, I don't think that's going to happen for me.:o
