Since when is any tuna trip a "relaxing excursion"? Must be a new breed of octogenarians out there now.

They "slept in" and missed the weigh in. LOL.

A charter boat site from Cabo, who is very reputable, said the fish was weighed on two different scales, one right away and one after the fish had sit a while. The fish weighed in at 1070. Either way, it was a monster.

Funny a true fish strory. The fish goes from 987 pounds to 1070 pounds in only two posts. :)

Imagine how much it will weigh tomorrow? LMAO

Whatever- it's BIG!

If you have never spent time in Mexico you don't realize that when you buy 5 gals of fuel, or whatever, it does not mean you actually get 5 gals. Same thing goes for the scales in Mexico, if you are buying something it gets weighed on one scale, and if you are selling them something, it gets weighed on another scale!!! Give or take 10% to 20% is the accepted "margin of error" in most all transactions!!

What do you with a fish that big, eat it? I would feel bad killing it.

after leaving it on the concrete slab overnight i can only assume the meat was shot. maybe it was iced and they just failed to mention that part in the article. a great catch for the youngsters. i just hope it was not weighed and then thrown away

Benn going down to Cobo for over twenty years now. You would be supprised at what the locals will eat. Just about anything.

Amen to that. The article states that "it remains unclear why this group chose to kill, rather than release the fish," but it was probably the crew who made the decision. The fact that a watchman was hired to keep an eye on it until dawn provides a clue. That thing was a skeleton within minutes in the early AM, and the locals were eating black marlin that night while the crew banked the $. A little publicity for the boat didn't hurt either. ;)

16 hr fight, no way any fish will stay live after that. no reserved energy left in the muscles to keep it tale moving. Sorry to say but put him down. If the fight was only 1 to 2 hrs it has a great chance of living. after that it a 50/50 chance.

That is one of the dilemmas for fisherman, No one want break the line off on a once in a lifetime monster that you have been fighting for hours, but to conserve the species and sport sometimes that is the best thing to do. Shame if that fish just went to waste though.

Smoked marlin and smoked sailfish is sold in all the town markets I have visited in the Mexican coast. I have tried both, they make a very good spread. Not something I would buy again, would only encourage more killing. That fish was definitely sold.
