Thinking of going to Block Island oct 2013.Are the fish still around? Does the island shut down that time of year?Any opinions would be helpful.

Block Island, RI is accessible all year long via the ferries out of Pt. Judith, RI. It is an established community with schools, businesses, etc. and is open year round. Very picturesque island and doesn’t have the upper crust stigma associated with as say a Martha’s Vineyard. I have never surf fished the block but heard of good reports during October. The local water surrounding it are very productive for blackfish/scup (porgy) and potentially cod during October on the party boats out of Pt Judith.

Surf Fishing can be good in Oct on the Block. Suggest you read the book "Stiper Chronicles" by Leo Orsi, Jr. Very good read and some tips and suggestions regarding key target areas in the surf there.
oct can be a fantastic time out off of montauk and block. just have to hope for nice conditions. fwiw I think this past october was kind of a dud because of the weather. you should read Gene Kelley.. he is an old captain from montauk that posts once a week about the general montauk and block fishing scene.. it used to be a webpage but now he just posts the weekly report up in a forum (its still the same great commentary).

It’s October, and last night was the full moon, so I guess it is official that the October bass run is on. And, the fishing is easy most of the time. And, there is a nice mix of fish, with a lot of mediums and some fish into the 30’s being caught. Most of the charterboats have been trolling, using the good old parachutes. Early in the week I found the eeling a little tough when I tried it, but apparently by the weekend it got back in shape again.. Naturally the surf casters are here in force. The parking lot looks like the one at Giants Field (I forget what it’s called now), Turtle Cove is full of anglers and even the guys with the Kmart fishing rods have been walking off with keeper bass.
It seems that most of the falsies are on the south side, which makes it nice because there are no conflicts with the main striper fishing areas. In addition there are plenty of stripers on that side as well.
