Let me first start by giving a little history on my planned trip for Saturday. On Tuesday my buddy Dave and I saw what looked to be a nice weather window for Saturday decided to make reservations on a site sponsor open boat. Dave called the Capt. To make reservations, he spoke with him for about 10 min (I was sitting right next to him) and the Capt. asked him to call back and leave a message on his voice mail. Dave also asked if he needed a credit card and the Capt. said that he knew who he was and there was no need for a credit card and to just call and leave a message with the number of people and the day we wanted to fish. Dave called and left a message with the requested info. Approx. 10 min later the Capt calls back and said that he had a missed call from this number. Dave explained that he was following the directions and that he had left a message. Ok….. all good! Fast forward to Friday evening around 6pm…. I called the Capt to ask what time the boat leaves the dock. Well the Capt informed me that he never got the voice mail and that there wasn’t any spots for us on the boat…. Something about F…ing new Iphone and why can’t we just reschedule for Sunday… As many of you here know that for the past couple of years I haven’t been able to get out much due to owning a new deli and I explained to him that Saturday was the only day that I could get out and I wasn’t happy. He said that he would check his VM and call me right back. He did call me back and informed me that he didn’t have any room and would try to bump two other guys. At this point things were getting heated and the last thing that I wanted to do was fish in a hostile environment so I told him that this whole thing was a bunch of BS and was hung up on at that point.
I reached out to Rich from Jersey Hooker and ask him if he knew of anybody that may have room for two in the morning. He asked me to give him a couple of min and he would get back to me. As it turns out we have a mutual friend that keeps his boat in the same marina that I do and that he was possibly heading out in the morning. I gave him a call and as luck would have it we were back on for fishing!!!! YAY!!!! We just needed to find bait.
Back on the phone to Rich and he waves his magic wand and comes up with a bushel of Greenies that Chris C was able to run down to meet Rich and pick up (Thank you so much Jersey Hooker for saving our day)
We meet at the deli in the morning and off to the Keyport public ramp. Off we go in pursuit of the elusive white chins.
We get to the fishing grounds and poke around a bit at a big lump that we thought would hold some fish. It didn’t look like there was anybody home so we wiggled a little North West and found some life in 100 ft of water. We drop down and had some life immediately but nothing was coming tight. We figured we would give it a few min and after about 30 min it was game on!
We had nonstop action for the next 5 hours getting our limit by 10:30 with fish up to 11.5 lbs. Jason was the pool winner with the slob which was quickly released after taking a couple of pictures. We had a couple of fish in the 7-8 lb class and a few more nice fish.
Had a nice quick trip back to the barn on Jason’s beautiful Contender dodging a ton of debris. Anybody heading out be sure to keep your eyes open as there is still a bunch of crap in the water.
Here are a couple of pictures from our trip.
A great big thank you to Jason and Chris for allowing us to tag along and also to Jersey Hooker for making it all happen, what a great day of fishing.
