Spro type guppy jigs are among the most popular jigs used for Fluke/summer flounder. What are your favorite hooks to make these?
Duratin= a forged silver hook, tin coated for rust resistance. One argument here is that if you "file" the hook to sharpen the point, the tip area will rust faster due to removing the protective coating. I feel that the forged shank does make it very strong for it's size.
Black Nickle= This hook has a dark brownish/black appearance. These hooks have a very sharp point, for good penetration during the hook set, and most people I talk to claim they are very strong. Any comments on rust resistance?
Any comments on hook brand, forged, wire etc?

We all know I am a big fan of OMT because of this very "hook" reason. But, to put feedback from our customers into play here: black nickle is their favorite!!
In addition to being the sharpest hook around, it handles sme big fish well. I have personally caught bluefin up to 68# on a 6oz OMT guppy jig. While being thin, it handled several fish one day...all 59#-68# class.
I have plenty of customers who also like this black nickle hook on larger jgs of 16oz - 20oz for trolling bass, fluke in 100' of water too. Allws them to use a heavier jig, without that big 8/0 hook we usually see.
Just a lil feedback as a whole, I know personal pref will over ride this for some guys. You come up with some great colors already Kevin, so IMO, THE BLACK NICKLE WILL ONLY IMPROVE YOUR JIGS! great topic .......

Using nothing but the Mustad Ultra Points for the minnow jigs, super sharp hooks, great hook sets, don't bend or break easy and last. Wash them down after use and you will see minimal rust. I do use the duratin hooks however for the teasers. It's a personal choice with these. Others may have differing opinions.

Duratin hooks are way to thick , and even when sharpened punch too big a hole.
The needle point mustads are much better suited for our fisheries here we use them for.
They also seem to balance alot better when tied and using a strip bait, the duratins seem to tip the head up too much due to the weight being further back
I also like the Owner Jig hooks as they are a little stronger than the mustad hooks. but they are pretty pricey $$$
at over a buck a hook.
so for most jigs I go with the mustads
