I was wondering if anyone ever used soft shell crabs for blackfish? I found 2 really old frozen softies in my freezer the other day and was wondering if it would be worth it to use.

How would you guys go about keeping the crab on the hook. Salt it first to make it tougher, or slightly cook it? Advice is appreciated. Logic tells me that this would be an awesome bait, but who knows.

Throw them in the garbage. Fresh is BEST.

fresh softshell is a great bait but i'd rather eat the crab :-)

When in a pinch any crab works to some extent. I've even used crushed blueclaw crabs right out of the machine that removes all the meat from the crab and they worked! Its a one shot deal, if you get the bite and you swing and miss its all over, but like I said, in a pinch they work.

I've found in the past that even calicoes work well!!
