stopped at the lower falls from seeley's pond today to try a new panther martin I picked up for my ultra light (and half hoped that maybe the lunker trout the guy caught in the upper falls had a relative down below). caught a 16" pickerel that hit hard, fought tough, and wasn't nearly as slimey as the pike from the passaic are. think I'll start targetting these guys as they're a blast on ultra light.

what's the biggest size pick you've bagged and how'd you get em?

I caught 3 in the 5-7 pound range a few winters ago, all fishing for pike with dead bait. I was actually disappointed to see a 6 pound pickerel come through the hole. I got all excited when something took my 13" dead sucker for a screaming run and was expecting a big pike. Pickerel can be fun, but not on a cold windy day on the ice. Once you get slimed you start to lose the felling in your fingers quick!

Biggest was 26" ... caught in Butterfly Bogs WMA on a jointed Rapala.

Largest in length went 28" in the Delaware River of all places. it smashed a buzzbait near shore in Walpack Bend. Thought to myself "cool - musky" not so fast. It was skinny so no weight to it - maybe 4lbs tops. Largest 'fattie' was a solid 26" from a Sussex Cty pond that went 5 1/2 lbs. Got that one on a Horny Toad of all things.

Best time of year for them is from late March until weeds build up in early May. They'll slam topwater all day - buzzbaits, poppers, buzzspoons. They'll take spinners too but make sure you have a 6" steel leader. Once summer rolls around, they bury themselves in weeds and they are not quite as active. Fall is another good time especially on those indian summer days following cool nights.

The scale could have been off but I doubt by that much.. http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q544/Gatto1227/ba470bf5.jpghttp://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q544/Gatto1227/cd85d4c0.jpg

Farrington has some good sized Pickerel. Always have done "good" by the Sir John's restaraunt.

Here's mine. Unfortunately it never hit the tape or a scale. Got it on a 5" Pearl KVD Caffeine Shad while smallie fishing at private lake in NY
