The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission is moving to implement a "Louisiana-only" red snapper season starting in 2013 that will allow anglers a far longer season than federal regulations permit.

"In addition, the Lousiana Fish and Wildlife Commission will consider extending the definition of state waters from the traditional 9 statute miles to 9 nautical miles or slightly over 10 statute miles, thereby adding to the area that anglers can legally fish for red snapper during the Louisiana-only season."

the above is excerpted from the Louisiana article:
If i am reading this correctly the state can define where federal waters start?
If so why do we have a 3 mile line for NJ? Remember the stupidity a few years back with the Axel carlson reef CBass, not to mention the stupidity today of CG Cutters on Patrol to make sure we dont annoy any Stripers swimming over the 3 mile line. If NJ can change this who do we contact with our opinions?

Christie's office I assume. Certainly not any of our feckless lib legislators who are probably in agreement with NOAA restrictions despite any lip service they may pay to fishermen. Christie certainly has the balls to do it, just have to get his attention on it. I use a pretty simple formula when voting. Dem = pro regulation, GOP = anti- regulation.

Not for nothing Christie stood against us when he sided with Omega Protein, the single corporation that lands 80% of the commercial catch of bunker. This was an instance where restrictions were being proposed to limit their commercial landings, which many consider unsustainable.
Not every regulation is a liberal boogeyman's idea to steal our fish. I believe 100% of the guys on this site would support a reduction in commercial landings of bunker 100%.
In this case, GOP = anti-regulation that hurts us.

PS I am not defending democrats in any way, shape or form. Just pointing out that our Governor took the side of big business over us fishermen on that issue. Please spare me the rants, I hate politicians in general no matter their affiliation and do not subscribe to either party's line of BS.

That took exactly 2 seconds with a Google search. The EEZ is 3 miles everywhere but the West Florida coast and Gulf states through Texas, where it is 9 miles.
