Can anyone provide any tips about kayaking the raritan bay? I am planning to launch in port Monmouth but have never done so. Any tips about tides, best places to launch, etc are appreciated. I am looking to avoid boat traffic as much as possible and am also looking for an easier paddle where I won't be struggling against the current to get home.
Thanks in advance for your help!

A great launch spot is at the Leonardo State marina. There is a beach there and good parking for you.
You can paddle alongside the Earle pier and out to the deep water at the end of it. Make sure you stay outside the white buoys that mark the pier demarcation line. There are plenty of fluke in the whole area.
It really doesnt matter what tide you launch there.

I appreciate the tips here Howard. My main concern was the tide so thanks for the insight here.
Wetsuit is on its way for proper cool-water paddling.
Thanks again!

I you want to do Raritan Bay that's a long trip around the mile long NWS pier. And the east face is very exposed.
One thing to do is kayak Mon-Friday. MUCH less traffic.
Another place much further west is in Keyport by the ramp.
Or coming out of Keansburg.
Belford too. They are all going directly into the Bay without having to round Earle.
You have to check wind direction too. There's lots of flats from Earle and west to Keansburg pier. A west or north wind has lots of fetch so that could be rougher. You will know soon enough.
Good luck.

5mm wetsuit fits nice. Not too limiting in mobility and I'm pumped to get out there sat. Best of luck to all!!
