First let me start by saying Happy Holidays to all and a SAFE , HEALTHY , HAPPY and PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR.
Well made a few phone calls today had a few phone call today about some Mackerel , being around . Its already Janurary and we are 2 weeks behind schedule .My buddy from the North called and confirmed Macks in some Cod bellies out on the East Beach. The boyz way out east have caught them. A gill net boat came into the Co-Op this week end and had a few in the LARGE MESH Monk net and my boat was out and had water temp of 44.8 degrees. A few days of hard NORTH WEST wind and COOOLD temps hopefully will make thing rite for these fish. On that note..... " Its Time To Go " so " WE GO "

The Mackerel fishing is around the corner, and a few Sponsor boats are targeting these little gems this winter. Now is the time to get ready so you can take advantage of this great fishing.
Recently I have been receiving some questions on Mackerel fishing and rigs used so I thought I would do a quick post to show what I have been using. All comments additions and other recommendations are welcome.
While Mackerel fishing is relatively simple some methods and rigs do work better than others at times. So keep your eyes peeled and ask the mates as well.
Here are a couple of pictures of some productive Mackerel rigs and some material recommendations so you can make your own.
For the rigs: 3-5 hook Mackerel teaser rig. I like the "Fire Cracker" type rigs. They are easy to make and very flashy. I find these the most productive although the Red surgical tubing rigs work very well. Both can be purchased "ready made".
Use a 6-10 oz sinker to get the rig down to the bottom. Mackerel will often hit on the way down as well and may be found at different depths.(the mates will help you with the proper weight. If it is a fast drift you will need a heavier weight.
Rod/Reel 7 ft 20-40lb rod loaded with 25-40lb test Matched reel/ penn Jigmaster or similar. (Rental rods are fine for this type of fishing)
Be prepared to prepare your catch. Don't keep more than you can handle. TIP/PAY the mates to at least remove heads and gut if that is what you want. It will save you time, and lighten your load. It took me 3 hours after I got home to prepare my fish (250 Mackerel 72 quart cooler full) AND another 2 hours to Vacuum seal the fillets. Bring ice even if it is cold and put a little water in the cooler.
Before I go fishing I make sure I have enough bags, wrap, freezer room and a spot to prepare the fish.
Material list for making Mackerel rigs.
Red surgical tubing (Surgical supply, home depot,)
Clear surgical tubing (aquarium air hose works)
Mylar tubing/ Silver and Gold (you can find this in craft stores)
40-50 lb Leader material
1/0 2/0 2X long shank saltwater hooks
Black barrel swivels 75-90lb
Fire Cracker instructions:
1) Thread Mylar braided tubing over 2/0 2xlong Mustad hook(unravel the end so it sticks out over the bend or the hook a little.
2) Tie in and glue with crazy glue near eye of hook.
3) Cover hook with clear surgical tubing up to bend.
Have fun,
Leif

Good Post from one of the Masters of this fishery. Just dont forget the Sabiki rigs they also work at times .One should always keep some at hand. This time of year the MACKS are usually on the bottom use nothing less that a six ounce sinker. Please NO DIAMOND JIGS. One reason is that the average winter time depth is 150 ft.A Diamond Jig has no business being used they are dangerous this time of year and for the most part too light. I will usually always call out the depths on the PA system. Listen closely because when we get them started sometime they come up off the bottom and are any where from mid water to the surface.
The galley will be open , but most of the Mackerel being served on board from my experience have been served RAW with some type of red dipping sauce.
As for my my other two pals that commented from the peanut gallery.( STEVE and RAY) I love you guys also, but Give it a break . Dont ruin a good informative post here .I do this because i enjoy running a party boat and this fishery. You know all the political hoo ha and why i am here. As far as positioning ive run fast boats , slow boats, medium boats . I ve held my own. We are not racing for rock pile , a pile of bird life, trying to catch the tide or racing to a tight area of jig fish. There are only 3-4 boats that do this on the whole East Coast now 1 guy out of Brooklyn. who in the beginng of this run is closer to the grounds so throw speed out the window he is on them first . The 2 sponsor boats in Belmar and 1 in Non Sponsor in Point Pleasant who does it part time if they are close and splits the day with bottom fishing. We get to an area we go slow and "LOOK " for the readings because if ya go too FAST you WILL MISS THEM ! Im sure the 7am departure will give me PLENTY OF TIME !! Like i said earlier. Lets not ruin a good informative post here. This is a winter fishery. The temps are gonna dipped below 40 degrees  Time to hibernate like the bears and squirrels all winter long, because in my 15 + years i have known and fished with the 2 of you I have yet too have the PLEASURE of seeing the both of you on any winter MACK boat i have run. Better Yet on ANY BOAT that does a winter fishery at all :p
Happy New Years guys i do love ya i mean that
See ya in the Spring

See you Saturday...
LEIF Do you have any simple recipes you can send my way for the macks Thanks.
Mackerel over Saffron rice/bacon/onion and tomato
This was really my sons’ idea. I was hesitant to cut the fish up in chunks but it worked really well. The bacon, onion and tomato added to the yellow rice was very tasty.
4 Medium Mackerel Filleted and skinned cut in 1 inch pieces
1package Carolina Saffron rice (see picture and instructions)
˝ lb Bacon cut/chopped in ˝ in pieces
1 Medium Yellow onion, Chopped
1 Medium tomato seeds removed and chopped
Cook rice Stove
Bring 1-2/3 cups water and 1 tablespoon margarine to a boil in a medium saucepan. Stir in rice mix. Cover, reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Fluff lightly with fork and serve.
Cook rice Microwave
In a 1-1/2 quart microwave safe dish, combine 1-2/3 cups hot water, 1 tablespoon margarine*, and rice mix. Cover and microwave on HIGH for 3 minutes. Reduce setting to 50% power and microwave for 17 minutes. Fluffy lightly with fork and serve. If your microwave does not have variable power settings, follow your manufacturer's directions
Set rice aside
In a medium non-stick sauce pan cook/ brown bacon.
Remove from pan leaving a little bacon fat in pan
Add onions and cook till translucent and slightly brown add tomatoes for 1 minute
Mix onions, bacon, and tomatoes with Saffron rice. Set aside.
Coat mackerel with instant four salt, pepper and paprika
Heat same pan/med high heat and cook fish stirring about 2-3 minutes
Place heated rice on platter and top with fish.
Enjoy,
Leif

Capt Jimmy is the Mackerel King. No need to worry about fishing time...he will give u PLENTY of time. Just bring heavy sinkers to stay out of tangles. A heavier rod will allow u to use a few more teasers. I usually use my 7' tuna jig rod, a 16oz sinker and 8-10 teasers and start swinging away.
Mack Fact...
Atlantic mackerel are moderately prolific, but many factors affect survival of the young. The eggs are released wherever the fish happen to be, leaving adverse winds to push eggs or small fry into areas where their chances of survival are slight. This behavior, combined with predation of large as well as young mackerel, results in a curious pattern of either superabundance or scarcity.

Joey,
That mackerel roe is the best. Too bad the spring run is pretty much non-existent. I could go for a batch with a side of bacon.

Golden Eagle Wasabi Tempura Mackerel
This is a really tasty way to prepare fresh Mackerel with a twist. Serve with steamed or grilled vegetables for a healthy dinner or lunch on the lighter side.
Serves 2
Ingredients
Filets from 4-5 Medium sized FRESH Mackerel (Skin On) & deboned
One Egg
Ice Water
Rice Flour - (All Purpose Flour substitute)
Wasabi Powder
Soy Sauce
Lemon Juice
Green Onion (Scallion)
Light Cooking Oil (Vegetable, Canola)
Sesame Oil
Make sure filets of Mackerel have skin on and are chilled prior to preparing this recipe.
In a shallow frying pan, heat cooking oil to 340-360 degrees. This is the proper temperature for making a crispy tempura.
Just Prior to frying prepare your batter, try not to make this batter earlier and let it sit, it should be made and used immediately for best results. Beat one egg and mix with Ice Water, the colder the water the better. The batter will absorb less oil during frying. Stir in sifted Rice Flour or all purpose flour until batter has a loose but clingy consistency. Add a tablespoon or so of wasabi powder to the batter mix and stir in thoroughly (adding more will give you a bit hotter flavor). Dip Mackerel filets in batter and let excess drip off, place in oil and fry until golden brown and crispy. Drain on paper towel, plate and serve with dipping sauce and steamed vegetables and perhaps a portion of brown rice.
Dipping Sauce
In a small bowl combine Soy Sauce and Lemon Juice to taste. Cut some scallion and add to soy sauce and lemon mixture. This sauce can be prepared earlier so flavors can blend together. A lighter Soy Sauce works best.
