i would be tentative, just need a break down on what we would be doing.
Also if you look back in the past few years, the best tuna fishing has really been in the july and august time frame, plus a much better shot at getting a 48 hour window of weather IMHO.
Either way should be a good trip, but end of september into october = wind and seas!

Should be a good time and good trip...
But fishing in nj, is nothing like fishing in california. There will never be a nj long range fleet, what would we fish for? go offshore, catch yellowfin, longfin, swords at night, mahi and tiles during the day, come inshore and catch some cod and pollock, then inshore for some seabass, finish it off with a little fluking at the rocks and then some blackfishing in 35ft off long branch? lol just breaking ballz guys..

California doesn't have 50+lb Yellowfin , Bluefin that you can jig , Night Swords , Mahi , or Big Eye Wolfpacks within 60 - 100 miles . To get away from the line shy live bait only fish California boats have to travel a day or more one way . Having fished on both coasts I like my odds better here . Give me a dumb chunk fish everytime !

I think this is great what BB is doing. I've often thought it would be very cool to have some San Diego style long range boats running out of NJ, NY or DE but it sure would be tough in the Fall with the weather we get offshore. I've gotten to the point now where I EXPECT Fall canyon trips to get blown out. :( I fished a full season out of Fishermen's Landing in San Diego and NEVER ONCE had a trip canceled due to weather!! Guess that's why it's called the Pacific...

In all the years of fishing out of San Diego I only had one trip canceled due to weather (Seaforth AM halfday) . We fished off the stern of the San Diego in the slip .

When Muldune & I did our long range EXCEL 5 day trip, fished the chunk with 30# test, our bluefish rigs...80# rigs on the troll...chunk caught bfts & lfts all 30-40# class fish...not quite like here.
It would be nice, but I don't see a long range fleet here on the East coast...be content knowing you can make at least ONE 48hr trip this year..we might be setting the precedent for the future...Only time will tell!!!
Thanks to Charlie Tuna and Capt. Bogan, we'll git 'er done;) :) Oh yea, check's in the mail for Sept. and for the Oct. trips...

I got some swordfish rigs at the NS tackle shop by the Voyager. Good quality crimps on what looks like 300lb leader. They have circle hooks though, which I'm still a little uneasy with.
Haven't had the opportunity to try them out yet.

The Comm's use them. When the circle hook's in the corner of the mouth you can lift the fish easier , they stay buttoned better due to the hook turning back on it's self , and there is less chaffing . I prefer Squid with circles .

Sounds like a dream trip for me. The only issue is were are we going to keep all the tackle. I would probably need to rent a uhaul to have room for the 6-8 rods, 4 coolers, huge tackle box, portable live well, gear bag, food, drinks, hookers etc... I would look to catch both an inshore and offshore grand slam plus whatever other bycatch comes up.

My question is what line do I put on it. I was think 300 yards of braid topped off with 650 yrds 80lb mono???? What do u think????
Who else is going??????? It has to be almost filled!!!

Wow, an 80... BC, hope you're a strong dud or just use that rig in an out rigger for swordys...I remember my first overnighter on the Rose Lee & I used an 80 wide 2 speed all night chunking, don't like to dead stick so I held it all night..I'll never do that again!! Arms /shoulders were killing me...300 yds braid sounds right, don't know if you'll need 650 yds mono but it couldn't hurt...go for that triple marker;) Just make sure of your crimps on your swordy rigs.....
Don't know how many have sent their money in, I thought 12-13 a month or so ago....hopefully it'll fill soon:)

Capt. Bob advised me a few days ago that there were 9 spots filled so it is about half there.
Call your buddies, spread the word outside the site and let's fill this thing out now.
I know it is still a little ways away but waiting till the last minute to see what is happening out there closer to the date to make a decision won't matter.
It's at the peak of the season so the odds do not get any better and waiting could mean being shut out.
It's the only 2 day trip out there so get in it.

Let's all keep up the chatter then we can start talking business on the details.
We are doing it with one of the best Capt's and crews around for an offshore trip and I know there are some real hardcore guys signed up with alot of experience which will make this trip a GREAT experience. Also for guys that may not be so experienced this is an excellent opportunity to fish with guys who know the ins an outs, maximize time at the rail and how fishing as a team can produce.

Can anyone suggest a list of tackle that will be needed for the trip?? I'd like to start preparing...Also, will the Gambler have everything we need on board??
From what I've read this is a few things on the list:
6/0 circle hooks on 60-80lb leader
230-330lb swivels
Is Flourocarbon needed when tying these rigs or could i just use regular mono? Also how long in length are the rigs? about 3 feet?
7-10oz hammered diamond jigs
2/0 hooks for Mahi and assorted small jigs
6/0 hooks for tile (hi-low rig??)
Egg sinkers.....what size?
Squid rigs, 8-16oz sinkers
Anything else I'm missing??

Of course the Gambler will have all the basics but give them a call if you want to check and see what they will have available and/or if you need to make rod arrangements.
I'm sure Capt. Bob will also comment on this at some point also.
Was hoping to hold off till we were a bit closer before the "Great Debate" started but here are some tackle suggestions. I will leave it as "Suggestions" as many have different opinions and are comfortable with what they have fished with in the past. Alot of good articles on this subject available but Iwill start it off with a few and let everyone chime in behind me as I know they will.
Let's start with terminal tackle etc.. With a little time I am sure we will be right to a suggested toiletries list.
Hook selection:
Not a circle fan at all but any comparable size to below if you so choose will work but remember the sizes are different than regular bait hooks.
Tuna 5/0 to 7/0 XH live bait. Many brands to choose from.
Mahi 2/0 to 4/0 live bait.
Swords 7/0 to say maybe 9/0.
Tile your run of the mill 6/0 to 8/0 bait holder ot octopus. High low gets it done.
Leader:
Note the range below in flouro will cover line shy to not so bashfull takers. You can also supplement or also include the same in mono if you wish.

Maybe a heavier mono or flouro leader for sword rigs. 100-150? Light sticks.
3-4 ft is good for chunking. Sword you may want to go double to avoid chafing the main line.
Swivels:
assortment of 150-500# will do
Lead
A variety of eggs. 1 to 12 oz but remeber you can do in combos to meet the conditions.
Large rubber cores. Nice to have if you need to add without re-tying or make a quick adjustment when the bite is on.
24-36 oz banks for tiles. Again remember you can double up here or do combos.
Squid jigs floating and sinking
Sabiki rig. Incase baitfish make an appearence.
Jigs
Hammered/flat too many options here. Bucktails and casting lures for Mahi also.

Phew, I was starting to wonder where all the offshore guys were...this is going to be a very special trip...in a year fraught with mostly bad news for me, this the BEST news yet:) :)
I'll set drags and check all the gear again, for the 3rd or 4th time...now keep fingers crossed that the Nasty Lady won't be waiting offshore.
Again, many thanks to Charlie Tuna for getting this trip together with Capt. Bob Bogan:D :D

I think any of us would set you up;) BUT we gotta catch em first!!!
looks like Ophelia's track will put her EAST of Bermuda but she'll only be on a line between Bermuda & the Bahamas on Wednesday..there's another disturbance just off Bahamas but only has a 10% chance of amounting to anything...then there's a nother disturbance about 300 mls South of the Cape Verde islands off Africa and has a 50% chance of increasing in strength...that one has a LONG WAY to go(3600+mls) to NY...
NOAA's forcast for WED. so far is S-SW 10-20 with 4-5' on SE swells...sounds like tuna weather to me..a nice little "tuna chop":) :)
