Every year the state picks a few lakes that they throw extra/larger trout then most lakes. They then put that info online and in the compendium. I can't seem to find that info anywhere and I have an 8yr old daughter and a 12yr old son that really want to get out. If it was just my son I would hit the south branch but with my daughter a lake is much easier. I remember one year it was Hoffman pond and last year it was in Califon. I was gonna do Spring Lake, which is a hike, but Saturday is opening day for baseball around where I live. Any info would be great.

Thanks Wilson, that's exactly what I was looking for. Too bad none of them are in hunterdon county. I will have it figured out by this weekend.
It saddens me to no avail that these quality fish are stocked in filthy ponds. They will die when the water warms up and the oxygen falls below their tolerance level. What a waste of money. I would put more smaller fish in, that require less oxygen, to make up the difference. Then the people who fish these areas can have a longer season before the trout die. If the brood fish were stocked in a river or stream, weren't caught, they would have a chance to breed again.
I stock channel catfish and bass for the fishing derby I run. The kids fish the pond all year for them. Makes more sense.
I have seen fish kills in ponds stocked with trout. Two hundred white decayed dead trout. It's a turn off and the pond stinks to high heaven. What kid would come back to that water and fish after seeing that sight?
Anyone who is in charge of a fishing derby and would like information on stocking a pond with warm water fish, pm me.

Yeah thought about that Steve. I am trying to find guaranteed fish..LOL. I usually take them to RV. when the sunfish spawn...then its catch n release heaven. Kids have a short attention span and I want them to always leave with at least catching a fish. Me...I am just happy with the experience of fishing but I am ALWAYS there to catch fish....the setting and the experience are secondary....LOL

I sort of agree with your sentiments but I think the reality is that there are very few serious anglers practicing catch & release at these ponds so in all likelihood the trout are going to end up on some one's table.
I'm not really in the know on such things but it does seem like quite a bit of the stocking is being geared towards the very casual fishing crowd to have a chance at a big one from shore. I heard from someone over the weekend that the state is contemplating not putting any of the brood stock they've stocked in Round Valley the last 2 years any longer because they don't feel it benefits the casual fishing crowd and only benefits those fishing from boats.
Most of us here are going to buy our fishing licenses every year. For the people who go out once or twice a season telling them they could catch a 6 LB trout from a pond that's smaller than their swimming pool seems more like a sales-pitch to me.

I agree. I know they're targeting license sales. It's about money, money, money.

Exactly......I was at Hoffmann last year shortly after openning day and there were a only few people still fishing for trout and taking all they caught. Which was not much because I think in less than a week the place was emptied of everything that was put in. They have actually cleared that pond (and many others) of virtually all surrounding brush and trees to make it even easier to access. Stocking there is really geared toward that type of fishing. Great for the kids but agree it should (and really only needs to be) smaller fish if that's what they are promoting.
