This is a late report, but better late than never.

I fished a small creek in western NJ on 3/13. First cast yielded a wild brown trout and I figured it would be excellent fishing, but turned out to be fair.

Water temp was only 41 degrees. I figured it would have warmed up with the rain but it hasn’t. Trout were still holding in their winter pools & eddies and not overly aggressive.

Got one sucker too. Every now-and-again these suckers hit. I might target them if there was a consistent way to catch them.

Bluebirds are out, too. Check out my stellar photography.

If you want suckers in the spring simply fish worms, garden or pieces of night crawlers, on small (#6-#10) hook. They're in pre-spawn at the moment and will eat almost anything. Most fishers don't target them- but they've saved many outings when trout and other more fashionable species are not cooperating.

Believe it or not, they are also delicious - smoked or filled and fried. Caught in the spring in clean, cold water they're worth keeping and eating.
