If your not looking for a chartplotter invest in a furuno gp37 its the best gps for anchoring they make.

One of best GPS units for the money is the Standard Horizon unit. Check it out. All the electronics dealers carry them. I have been in the marine business for over 15 years and know a thing or two about the best units for the money.

I think Garmin makes the best stuff. A friend has the 545S (older model) which is a fish finder GPS combo. The unit works great, is simple to use and chock full of great features. One feature I really like on the Garmins that will help you getting set up on anchor is their tracking feature. It basically leaves a small line on the screen of where you've been. This will hep you when setting up on wrecks. Once you position yourself over the wreck put it in nuetral and let you boat drift. The unit will draw a line indicating the direction of your drift from the wreck. Run a reciprocal coarse back over and past the wreck countinuing on that same line and drop your anchor.

You would not be disappointed with the 540s. Two friends of mine have that unit. Super easy to use & good clarity with the sounder, even at higher speeds. And both guys are using transom mount transducers.

I think its better to try and go with an 8" or bigger screen, the bigger the better,
As far as Lowrance, my (2) 111lcd units have worked flawlessly for the past 5 years, are very user friendly, and their track lines are WAY easier to see than many other units.
When upgrading will I go with them again, dont know as I really like what I see in the furuno line, and the garmins are also great units.
Funny thing about having all the bells and whistles is many guys who have upgraded in all the different brands feel the older units were better
and as far as the FF portion, when they are stacked up like this, you should see them on any unit
