If I were buying a new one it would be a Garmin.... They make a lot of units in your price range, are the most easy and intuative to use,are loaded with lots of cool functions and they have great customer support.

garmin is good and user friendly...
Furuno is great, im a huge fan... also if you wanna spend a little more northstar is the boobies!!
what size screens? im a HUGE fan of having them seperated.. makes it much easier to see..
on my small cc i have a furuno navplotter and a small northstar fishfinder!! both work great!!

Which ever unit you buy, get the BIGGEST screen you can afford.
It def makes navigation ALOT easier.
I have been happy with My lowrance units ,as they are very user friendly.
Cabelas bargain cave has some great deals on units all the time from many manufactures.
And you can bargain down the price even more just by asking

Love the Garmin stuff.
As Hammer stated, get the biggest screen that you can afford.
Check out the link below but be careful. They are not the cheapest on everything but when I was shopping around a few years ago they we the cheapest for my plotter. Good luck

Get the biggest screen you can is good advice and don't waist time with a transom mount transducer.
Spend the little extra $$ and effort on a thru hull.
You will be MUCH happier.
Huge difference when I wnet to thru hull vs my old transom mount.

garmin is top notch, but depends what you are looking for. big screen yes! ease of use yes! i went with a garmin last year, happy yes but, i fish on my uncles boat down south every once and a while and i have side scan envy. i was looking at a hummingbird 798ci SI when i was making my choice and i know they have some issues but the feature is sweet if you concentrate on bottom fishing. the prices have come down a bit and the cartography is better on a garmin but everything has its good and bad. after a new engine, new transmission, new gas tanks and deck the fish finder chart plotter was the hardest decision:D

Chad, I just bought a Garmin 3210 for a friend that runs a boat out of Bermuda. He did a lot of hunting to find wht he wanted and eanded up that this was the one. I ended up finding it for him in Arizona for $1,100.00.
