Hopefully I will have the dates off as I don't feel up to driving all the way to Montauk yet. Good thing is that we should be able to keep a double limit given that the trip leaves before midnight and is over 18hrs.

Was fortunate enough to do 2 of the trips to up around Block with you guys last year. Had a ball and caught loads of cod. My first trip I had 22 to like 14lbs with numerous throwbacks. My second trip I had like 12 with TONS of throwbacks. Great trip, I suggest you get out on the MISS BELMAR PRINCESS if you can. These trips are awesome.
Won't be able to swing it this year.
Good luck to all that get out.

if you go out at 1pm for tuna and catch 3 yft per my by 7pm.. dont wait until midnight and catch 3 more per man.. doesnt work like that.. just wanted to let yo know that.. i am NOT stirring the pot.

Sport, We had a blast on these trips. Couple of beers and some fish cakes on the way out. A few stories and down in the bunk for a 6 hour nap. We get there around 3am, look around a little and start fishing.
You can leave the panties on, this is much easier than driving 4 hours after fishing all day.

Are you sure because every boat I've been on out of Mass does a two day limit for groundfish on 24 hr or greater trips. I believe there are different regs for tuna and groundfish. Capt Greg of the YC indicated that if the trip is over 18 hrs and covers two days and has two licensed captains, you can keep two day limits for groundfish. Maybe it is a state regulatory issue?

I spoke to Capt. Jimmy about this. Lenght of trip has nothing to do with it.
1) We will be fishing in federal waters
2) NJ Has no limit on Cod except size.
SO NO LIMIT

There is now a federal limit of 10 fish. If we could find fish in NY state waters and never enter federal water on the return trip, we could keep an unlimited amount. However the fish are not that close to Montauk.

I'm not saying it is bad or that I would base my decision on the limit. Even if I only caught small cod and had a limit that would mean about 15lbs of fillets. I just was trying the clarify things. I know that in NY, Mass and NH a 24 hr trip equals a two day limit of groundfish.

No prob. The laws are so screwy that different states have different interpretations for enforcement purposes. I know that NY is enforcing the 10 fish federal limit this year, so I guess that is another plus for leaving from Belmar.

Hopefully I will be coming. I can't get my work schedule for Feb for another week or so. I will be on the Gambler on Fri, hoping to at least get a market to go along with my ling.
Over the past few years the codfish have been on the rebound. Tight restrictions put on the species in the New England area have started to pay off and the prolific cod is starting to re-appear in numbers.
Some of these fish have been filtering down to areas not far from Block Island RI and Montauk NY.
The cod fishing has also improved in N.J. as some of these fish have trickled down and taken up residence on the local and off shore wrecks that exist 20-50 miles off our coast. Some cod have also made an appearance on the farms in the spring and are occasionally caught fishing for blackfish and ling. Hopefully the trend will continue and we will able to continue to target this fine fish.
With that being said, I have had a lot of questions regarding cod and cod fishing in different areas, specifically Montauk.
This post will primarily deal with Party boat techniques in that area with respect to the codfish that have been invading that area in Mid January, February and March.
This is typically not wreck fishing. You are typically drifting over "piles" or "pods" of fish that are actively feeding on herring or mackerel. They have the feed bag on and are getting ready to spawn. These fish are not line shy and will aggressively engulf large (7/0-8/0) hooks baited with clams and can be taken on jigs as well.
Sounds easy, right??? It is if you are prepared. You need to be prepared because the "bite" does not last all day long in most cases. Without the proper gear and rigs you may only end up with a few cod, instead of your limit. You may use what you like and these fish can be hooked on almost anything, but to be more efficient and productive I recommend the following.
Rod
I recommend a heavy 8ft 30-60lb cod rod or the like.
Why? This is not light tackle fishing and you are on a Party boat. You will be using 10-20 oz. sinkers.
These fish are generally under 20lbs and most are 5-10lbs. You want to be able to lift these fish into the boat, unhook them and send the rig back down. You need a heaver rod for that and in some cases you will be dealing with double headers.
Reel
I recommend a Penn 4/0 sized reel loaded with 40-50lb mono. line or 65-85lb braid. This reel will match the rod you are using and make life easy for you.
Why? Cranking up two ten pound cod with a twelve once sinker from 100-160ft of water with this type of reel makes it that much easier. Why the heavier braid??? In the cold, it is much easier to untangle 85lb braid, take my word for it.
Rigs
Again for the most part, you will be drifting on pods or piles of cod. When drifting or in a currrent, I recommend a two hook rig with swivels attached to the hooks. (see tangle free cod rig) The rig is approximately 40 inches long and has two 8/0 O'Shaunessy hooks equipped with IN curly tail grubs in pink, white, chartreuse or blue and white. The hooks are looped onto inch droppers and lb test mono is used.
Why? The swivels prevent any twisting of the rig while fishing and cod will twist while being brought to the surface. The less time dealing with "fouled" rigs, the more fishing time. The swivels will also allow a natural presentation of the bait and the curly tail grub will provide enticement.
Note...Bring traditional cod rigs as well. Often the boat will anchor when the bite slows and in those cases a rig without all the bells and whistles may work better. There is also some great ling fishing in that area. Often you will anchor up on a spot and have the opportunity to catch some large red hake so bring some rigs as well.
Jigs
When the action slows I have found jigging to be productive. Bring 10-24oz hammered and Viking jigs tied on 80lb leader with a teaser. I have seen much success with a sliver and blue teaser on the bottom hook of the jig as the flash imitates a mackerel or herring.

NY has a bag limit of 10. new jersey does not have a bag limit yet.being that we are federally permit we have to go by federal regs.
im not gonna get into a regulation debate. we have enough of that already.

Ok. Those are the regs that were explained to me. Looks like the 20 interpretation is accurate. Which means you have a chance at more fish, as well as it being less hectic and avoiding traffic tickets in the Hamptons. There were days in that fishery last year where a double limit was more than possibile, even likely, but every year is different.

Refresher cod rig post......
Killer Tangle Free Cod Rig
This rig works great when there is a current an drifting. It does not tangle and it catches Cod.
You can also remove the botom hook and replace it with a smaller hook on a snelled leader for ling.
DISCLAIMER...
CONDITIONS VARY SO NOTHING WORKS PERFECT ALL THE TIME AND I KNOW EVERY COD FISHERMAN HAS THERE FAVORITE RIG.
Materials
7 ft 80-100lb clear Leader
3 230lb Spro swivels
2 8/0 Mustad/Eagle Claw O'Shauhnessy
2 6-8 in Pink Grubs
First open eye of 8/0 hooks and attach swivel, close eye using pliers. The swivels allow the hooks and bait to rotate so the rig will not trist on itself.
Sharpen these hooks!!! I use a dremel to do this because it is fast. Whatever you use make sure the hooks are sharp.
1 Tie a Perfection loop in one end for the sinker
2 Tie a 6in dropper loop 6-8in up from the loop
3 Tie in another Dropper loop 3ft above the first.
4 Attach one Swivel with clinch Knot 6-10 in above last loop
5 Loop hooks on and thread on pink grubs.

Sport the ride is no different than goin to one of the southern canyons tuna fishing
Some people rather relax and take the ride by boat than drive to Montauk that was one of the reasons for starting these trips . To offer something different.
Also if its blown west or northwest we have 2 beaches to ride and duck under which make the ride there and back comfortable.
Hope to see ya on one

Just saw the codfishing was good in that area(out of Montauk) yesterday. It seems a lot of limits were taken and the fish were a little bigger, up to 14lbs. Lots of bait were also reported and the cod were stuffed with herring.
Jigging worked well with all the bait around.

It looks like the codfishing is pretty good in the area. There were some conflicting reports but it seems the cod are moving in now and they are bigger than they have been. This week should tell as the fishing really turned on the end of January last year.
This year they seemed to move in a little earlier.

my contacts informed me last night that the fishing is starting to heat up. still good days and bad, depending on drifting conditions. I would love to join you on one of these trips, however it just doesn't make sense for me being here in northernmost NJ. Good luck, maybe I'll see you out there:D
steve
I gotcha Steve no problem some of these trips aren't for everyone and don't make sense for everyone , but for some of the people that live south of the Driscol they would rather sleep on the boat for 6 hours than take that drive. Maybe we can con you into a southern spring Blackfish trip or A spring Striper .There's alway MACKEREL if you dare!
See ya around

I live up north too. Last year I joined the Express for the commaraderie (sp?) It was GREAT! I felt like we had this massive party boat and I was going on a cruise to dance on some other peoples' waters. It was just plain fun.
But I certainly understand that I could've halved my trip by just driving to Montauk.
Looks like i'll have to do some of each :)

There's been alot of contraversy about the bag limit on COD for these trips To BLOCK well here it is......
I just got off the phone with Travis Ford from NMFS on the updated COD bag limit. While fishing in the EEZ the size limit is 22 inches and a bag limit of 10 per CALENDER day unless you are on a trip longer than 15 HOURS covering 2 consecutive calender days. Example we are leaving 8:00 pm on the 5th ( 1st calender day)Returning on Feb 6th 8:00 ish ( second calender day over 15 hours) You are allowed a double bag limit of 10 x 2 calender days = 20 COD FISH.
So to Sum it up .... Bag Limit On These Trips 20 COD PER PERSON
If any on wants to pm me there E mail address I have an E mail from NMFS i can forward .
I hope this clarifies some things and may be with the Double Bag limit it will make some deciding factors for someone BOOKING one of these trips.
As always thanx

It's good to make sure so no mistakes are made or hard feelings occur. 10 fish is plnety for me and my friends. with 20, I'd have to maek some new friends..*L*.
Just finished tying up around 40 Killer King Cod rigs.
Wonder how the blue and white tiger will work??
Leif
Codfishing slowed up off Block Island the past few days. The full moon tends to effect the bite and It appears the moon is having an effect on the fishing now. Fishing should improve after this on the down side next week. Make your reservations now so you don't miss out.
Over the past month good catches have been made but reports have been inconsistent as well. Sometimes bait is better and other times jigs work best depending on what the cod are feeding on. Be prepared for both and change your strategy as conditions warrant.
Listen to the captain and watch the mates and anglers who are catching. Be prepared to adapt and you will succeed.
Good luck, Leif
Rigs, cakes and chowder are being prepared. Feb. 5th should be good.
They are KILLING THEM NOW IN THE AREA. Let's hope it lasts for a month or so.

OK, it look like we are good to go. Weather looks good off Montauk and Block.
We have a great bunch so far with many NJ'fer Classics like Jon Devin, Snapper, loveshislabs, and fishbox22. Leif(son) will also be on this trip.
NW winds Friday night 15-25 and same for Sat. Maybe less on Sat.
It will be COLD but not that cold, 20's and 30's so dress appropriately
There have been no COD reports since before the storm so we do not know what to expect.
I think we will get them, Jimmy is a great Capt. and he is lucky and has a nack at finding the fish, also Capt Cole will be Co-Capt. and he is excellent as well and is a great "wreck" Captain.
We will be on a new moon so bring some extra heavy lead. We may or may not need it.
I just tied up some new ling rigs as well. The ling fishing has been excellent up there as well on the rough spots and wrecks so be prepared.
Mike will have Killer Cod rigs, We have about 50-60 rigs in all colors so see Mike if you need them.
Although the seas look fine, take Dramamine if you get motion sickness. It is no fun being sick on this type of trip.
Looking forward to seeing everyone,

I caught a sea raven that was an embarrassment to sea raven fishing everywhere. It was just tiny. I also saw another one caught, as well as a couple of pout. So I guess we caught the Joe Murray Cod Trip Hat Trick, a cod, a raven and a pout.

When i worked in the fish market we would just hold the fillet up to the lite , take a tweeser or knife and pluck em out.

Yep...thats the best way. Hold the fillet to the light to spot them, take a very thin knife, small cut, then gentle flick.

when i got home i washed the fillets and put them in the frig on a bakers rack inside a big pyrex dish it was late i was going to pack them when i got up in morning.i pulled out dish and there was about 10 that were laying in the bottom of the dish. this is something that i normally dont do but i will try it next time. no worms in fish that was cooked yet .

I wold not recamend cleaning your fish in fresh water until you intend on cooking it.;) I've been holding them up and plucking em out latly, but for many years I did not even know they were their. It kinda bugs me out too, I feel obligated to tell the people I give fish away to that they in fact have worms. The result has been I have a lot less people to give cod to! Good thing the fishing is not what it used to be, I'd have a hundered pounds of filet in my freezer aper trip!!

Looks like we will have to start looking out to the next trip. It will be interesting to see how things look after this storm and moon. March and April could prove to be good months for cod fishing locally, North and East of us.
One thing for sure is there have been more cod around in the last few years.
