Gambler's first offshore tile trip of the season was a bust. We tried many different spots and depths. We got clobbered with dogfish everywhere we went. (Another failed experiment by fisheries managers, marine scientists determined that --dogfish were on the brink of extinction).

The ride out was rough but continued to gradually get nicer as the day progressed. The fishermen were good sports, working hard every drift but the dogs gave no quarter. I believe that the spiny dogfish will need to migrate inshore before the tile action can improve. Hopefully soon.

Gambler is out now, Capt Mike at the helm, on a 10AM till 3PM taug trip. We will be running the 10 to 3 everyday except Fridays through April.

The dogfish stock was protected for one reason and one reason only, commercial interests for foreign export value in particular for the European Union for fish and chips as a substitute for cod which has been overfished. Fisheries management could care less about the impact dogfish are having on predation of other stocks as long as the commercial interest of the stock is protected. The fishery was never endangered, it was labeled as such to preserve the commercial value involving foreign trade with Europe and to provide another fishery for the exclusive use of the commercial sector.

Tariffs will change the desire for dogfish overseas. Filet and release!

Check spiny dogfish for tags. I tagged 3 at Manasquan Inlet, but nobody reported recapturing one yet.
