I can't begin to nor do I want to imagine what those mackerel must taste like sitting in the heat we've been having without ice. The meat has to be like mush, not even sure how you'd fillet them. Maybe people use them for bait but I just can't imagine what they must taste like for anyone planning on having them for dinner.

Skin on bones in or just head um and gut um. Most fish will turn to mush from heat/sun.

Chub mackerel , so hopefully using them for bait .
They are already soft fleshed to begin with .

Betting they are one of the buffet dishes the giants are zoned in on right now

No doubt about bluefins and giants and bridled alive they're the best bait in the spring for threshers. Great if kept alive offshore for bigeye and YFT and if brined properly they can be good troll baits.

CHUB MACKEREL :According to nutrition specialists, the chub mackerel is a healthy meal, high in protein and rich in omega-3 and unsaturated fatty acids. Due to its high energy and protein intake, and low carbohydrate value, it is recommended in the diets of growing children and pregnant women, although it may contain high levels of heavy metals. The chub mackerel is a popular dish in Sicilian cuisine, in which it is served in a variety of ways. In the kitchen and market, the fish is in the best condition if the meat is firm and the eyes are clear with the colors bright. For the most part, it is eaten fresh, but can be seen pickled or frozen. In Sicilian cuisine, it is also served filleted and raw, marinated in oil, lemon, salt, and pepper

But how does it hold up in 90-100 degree high humidity days lying in a black tote on deck. Then again, maybe I'm wrong and it's like salmon and I've been missing out on a good eating fish but I don't see how any soft flesh member of the mackerel family can taste good after baking in the sun all day

Yes, a cooler with ice is definitely a necessity when party boat fishing in August.

I remember the burlap sacks with bluefish baking in the sun, they were like mashed potatoes by days end, many fares just left them on the deck and went home.

Really Bill?? Do you know how those fish were cared for, what they are going to be used for? Is this really any of your business? You need to lighten up my friend!

Didn't I say what you just said in my posts. Maybe they taste like salmon and I'm wrong, maybe they'll be used for bait, etc.? I don't have the right to state an opinion or ask a question on the site? Your site, your rules. You asked me to stay away from politics and be civil, don't believe I crossed those two lines with my post. Is it my business? No. Is it my opinion? Yes. If I can't state my opinion on a sponsor's thread let me know and I'll add that to the list. How many comments have been made on this site over the years about the impact of harvesting too many bluefish letting them fry in burlap bags and being wasted and not once do I recall those posters being called out or questioned. In fact, everyone agreed. I didn't say or mean anything derogatory about the Capt. or boat, I simply commented on what I assumed the taste of chub mackerel baking in the sun all day would taste like. If talking about the culinary aspects of fish isn't allowed on the site, as I said your site your rules so I will certainly refrain from doing so going forward.

Capt. Shinn, if you find my comments offensive, I'll be more than happy to delete my posts. Just trying to point out what many of us know which is soft flesh fish which didn't appear to be iced down in very hot weather don't hold up very well when it comes to consumption, if that's how they're being used.

God forbid a person recommends using ice in hot weather .
As it def helps keep the fish more stabile being used for both consumption or bait.

Unreal people getting on these boats don’t bring a cooler and ice.
But seeing Capt Ron complain about the same thing on his boat regularly seems many are broke when it comes to common sense

I feel very sorry for the garbage men in the communities of many of the patrons on the this trip.

I’m going to be pissed in 25 years from now people are remenissing of the “lights out” chub mackerel fishing of the 2020s… kinda like whiting and many other fish today.
