Max and I got an invite out of left field to jump on with captain Chris D. And Rich to try and get on this hot tilefish bite. We poked a round for an early season tuna first, which didnt happen despite all the mammal and bird life, but the depths did not disappoint!
We fished 400-450ft and a few of the drifts were great action on goldens and bluelines. Bait rigs and jigs both worked. Id never tried tile fishing with a jig before and if anyone else here is curious about it, i didnt really need anything special....
i spooled up a smaller sized penn fathom with about 450yrds of #30 braid on a $60 shimano sarguaro rod , #40 fluoro leader and a 420g nomad knife style jig. Slathered it up with lip glu scent gel and put a tiny sliver of bluefish skin on the hook and it worked like a charm and was pretty cool compared to the classic 2lbs slab and bait rig.
Boat limit was acheived and delicious meals were enjoyed. We got some cool video too, mostly on the instagram account.
