We shoved off at 3pm with an eager crowd to ok conditions. Stopped where we had been fishing and put her on a drift. About an hour in we got our first bite. A novice was holding on for dear life as the line on the Penn 6/0 dwindled down to 1/4 spool. He was pinned to the rail with saucer eyes and sweat soaking him. The fish settled in the bow and the brawl continued for a while with Jay tagging in and Capt. Walt finishing off the beast. 3 gaffs in and over the rail it came. The 100lb class Bluefin sort of glowed in the deck lights. It had small Squid in it's stomach when we flushed it. We drifted some more to no avail. Capt. Mike fired her up and off to the edge we went. We looked in the deep and couldn't find the temp. break. The wind came up and Capt. Mike anchored us up on the edge for the rest of the night. We caught a few dozen Squid and had livies for bait till the end of the trip. We didn't have anything happen through the night. We picked up and ran back to where we caught the Bluefin. As the sun rose we started to see life around us. Whales were spouting around us and we read bait and fish from time to time. We hooked another fish speed jigging. This fish kept on the up current side and had over 150 yards of 60lb mono and another 50+ yards of braid before it stalled. Jay tagged in and an epic fight continued in the bow. Jay put the Maxel jigging rod and Penn Fathom reel through it's paces. Within a few minutes we put 3 gaffs in this tank of a Bluefin. We continued to move around as hundreds of small Dolphins joined the Whales for quite a show. Saw a Pilot Whale in the distance on our last drift. When Capt. Mike sounded 3 horns there were 4 other big boats drifting in the area. We saw the Big J boat one fish . We only had 2 fish hooked and we got them both.
The only bait fish was caught on a Sardine. The other was on a 200gm. speed jig. It was loaded with Sand Eels. We had a great group of people who fished hard. Might be on Mondays trip. Hope the Saturday night trip does well.

Good report Pete. Seems that bite is about dried up/fished out with no replacements, to be expected with the Bluefin. Sounds like your two were "mud bellies" as were ours...and the edge is still dead, so far....

You doing the Nov. 12 24?

Capt. Jeff went long Saturday night and I heard they put a catch together of big fish. More details as I hear them. My tackle is on standby in case I get the call for those 2 trips. Capt. Mike canceled today's trip due to weather. I just respooled my fathom with 60lb when Capt. Mike called with the news. Had Bluefin for dinner last night . Rich and fatty. I'll smoke some with my venison jerkey this week. Gotta love those vacuum sealers!

Assuming the bluefins were inshore of the canyon?

Water went ice cold off the edge (hudson) but some guys are getting bigeyes fishing deep baits. Friend of mine got a #235 bigeye last Wednesday fishing baits 200+ feet down. 2.5 hour fight on an 80W with #80 leader. Epic stuff!
