We headed out with a full boat of eager customers to decent conditions with a bit of a swell. We arrived in the general area that we were fishing and put her on a drift. After two drifts we had one small Bluefin and released a large Shark (Tiger?). Capt. Mike fired her up and off to the East we went. We slowed down to Whales spouting in the darkness. We anchored up as the wind started to build. Had the first Yellowfin on deck within a half hour.We caught a few squid but they were tough. We had a pick through out the night with shots of 2 to 5 on at a time. I think that we had 25-30 boxed by 2am. These fish were mostly 2. gaffers and at least 3 30 lb class reels got spooled! I loaned out one of my knife jigs and the assist hooks got straightened. We had some jigfish if you wanted to work a little for them. When magic time came a lot of customers were in their bunks exhausted from fighting fish. The wind slowed as the sun rose. The bite went full rack, chewing on the rubrails, wide open. Anything that went in the water got ate !!! We got another Bluefin and a couple Falsies mixed in. We headed for home early with all our boxes wedged. We cut at the dock in the rain as the storm caught us. I think everyone went home with their 3 Yellowfin along with a couple of Falsies.
It was awesome to see so many Whales and hear/see them spout. Saw one group of Mahi but they wouldn't bite. Sharks were not much of a problem but I think we paid the tax a couple of times. Didn't see any Blue Sharks. I think we had Browns and Tigers. We caught some squid but they were tough . We had one decent shot of them around 3 am and tanked a quickly dozen. The fish were not line shy and straight 80 lb. was the ticket. We caught them on Sardiness, Butterfish, and Squid. The weather forecast kept the small boats in port. The J. and the V. were by us all night. We had a good group of people and not too many chummers. Looking forward to see how the 36hr trip will do.

No Pete, but I'm so happy for you and the boat. So happy when the boat plugs everything. Guess I better bring my big boy rig next 36hr..:):):)

Congrats! Nice when they bite on 80lb. Old school numbers.

I saw a pic and post of a 291 bigeye landed last week on #40 lb leader. Two hour fight. Post mentioned one of the few midshore spots where tuna have been caught most of the season. The fish was massive. Hard to tell if it was actually a bigeye or nice bluefin, but it's not the norm for eyeballs to roam those areas. However, if the food source is substantial, I'm sure a few could easily find their way off the edge and into 200ish feet of water to eat those sand eels.

A few weeks back we had a #150 blue marlin in our lights at the bacardi. Blew my mind. It charged the transom and shot under the boat. Then it started swinging its bill at the running gear. Sounded like it was hammering the props or shafts.

So Andy, I guess anything is possible right? Spooled by bigeyes. Spooled by giants. Big unstoppable sea monster lol

I think big Yellowfin combined with lever drag being set too low. Can't set lever drag without putting reel in free pool. I don't think that the reels in question were capable of more than 20lbs of drag(Diawa?) anyway.
