We're down in Hatteras island for our annual fish and fun trip. Looks like it's gonna be more fun than fish as the wind will hard out of the south for the next 5 days. No boats running off for the entire week. It sucks bc leading up to this week fishing down here has been red hot with most boats getting loads of black fin and some yellows. Wahoo has been good along with a robust bill fishery. One boat had 6 sails on a trip. Any way I did hit the local party boat for a 25 mile trip to the gulf stream. The boat drifts for fish as the current is to strong to anchor effectively. Most of the fish caught were 3 to 5 lb triggers and some nice 3 to 5 lb seabass, some vermillion snapper and sand grouper. Red snapper were caught to 10 lbs but the season was only 2 days so they went back. Highlight at the whistle was a nice about 8lb red snapper get chomped in half by a 5ft barracuda. Looks like a bunch or beer drinking the rest of the week. All the Best FH

Were you chartered to sail out of Hatteras Harbor Marina ? I’ve fished aboard The Release several times out of that marina-usually in the spring or fall. Thinking about going next August and good to hear that they catch blackfins at that time (I know the usually summer offshore catch is mahi & wahoo).
Did you fish on the party boat that is next to Hatteras Harbor ?
Might want to consider hitting the surf or the Avon Pier as there should be plenty of Spanish Mackerel around.

In 2018 I spent a week down Cape Hatteras with my tin boat hoping to crab in Pamlico Sound. Dock in the VRBO we rented. IDEAL! NOT!
Huge weedless two foot deep flats devoid of anything. ANYTHING! In fact the tackle shop in town does not even sell crab bait.
I was blown away how poor the Sound side was. its almost 10 miles across, but poor on the eastern side

I know of the boat Release, never fished him. I've been. On several boats here mostly out of Teachs'. We have an 18 ft center down here we run around in. The sound has a good fishery also. Reddish, blues, fluke is out of season. Lots of things to do. The beach doesn't produce much this time of year, mostly croakers and " sea trout"

Yes my queen I do in fact suck. That is known. We fished the Miss Hatteras. Needed 16oz to get down with a heavy scope, consistently letting line out until you had a bite. They use small pieces of squid for bait. The locals who out fished everyone used small pieces of brined shrimp. You need a beefy rod that can handle heavy lead.
