Went fluking yesterday out of Atlantic Highlands. We did pretty good. Can the fluke ribbons from this trip be frozen and used the next time we go out? Can you get fined for this?
That's a no no, You can only use the ribbon of a harvested fluke which has to be onboard for inspection if you get boarded.

Plenty of other species you can make strips from that make great fluke bait; bluefish, sea robin, false albacore, bunker, mackerel, herring.

Just don't get caught and if you're smart you won't get caught.

My#1 is fresh Sea Robin strips. It holds up better. Fresh is best. A lot of the better Fisher persons that I know just fish gulp on the spro/chicken rig. No need to break laws. Go figure,we have caught keeper Fluke night Linging on clams !

Just posted a message on the Miss Montauk thread concerning this exact point. Are NY regs different than NJ in this matter. If not, why are there fluke ribbons on the cleaning station in almost every report when the boat is done fishing for the day and appears to be on its way back to port. It was always my understanding that any ribbons or strips used are limited to one fish, the rack for that fish has to be on board and that fish has to be caught the day you're fishing. If that's true, why would anyone be saving ribbons at the end of a trip or are the regulations different in New York than they are in New Jersey or is my understanding of the regulations wrong.

Must be a different rule for charters because they often have them on the boat to use for bait and the previous days racks are long gone
Personally I like salmon ribbons whe I fluke

I thought that might be the case but I couldn't find anything that stated that.
As far as salmon is concerned, conditions and where you're fishing and the forage in that area has a lot to do with the best bait on any given day. Having said that, fishing deep water, rocky structure with bucktails and fresh salmon belly strips to me is one of the best baits you could use for large fluke. The amount of oil and scent fresh salmon gives off is second to none.
