Went down to the boat early to get some stuff organized and get out of the house for a change. Really didn’t have any plans to fish because of the constant threat of thunderstorms. As usual the weatherman screwed up and since it was really hot at the dock and no storms in sight, the wife and I decided to take a quick boat ride to cool off and I just happened to have my fishing stuff on board
Took a short ride out in front of the weapons peer and drifted the channel edges not expecting much from a really slow drift and not a breath of wind. We fished for about an hour and had some skates and robins. Ruth got the first fluke, an under and I followed right after with an over. Both fish were caught on a distinct tide line bordering the channel in 30-35 feet of water bucktailing pink shine gulp.
So much for there not being any fish in the bay and listening to all the doom and gloom weather forecasts. Glad we decided to go…The Slaters Slider and a fresh Fluke dinner topped off what would have been another otherwise boring day at home doing chores.

It's great that you and your wife decided to go out and do some fishing. I'm to the point I don't listen to the weather report unless it's a 75% chance of rain or heavy winds. There are definitely Fluke in the bay and big ones. But the cleaner water and structure of the ocean attracts more fisherman.

I’m with you on the weather and people forget that theses summer thunderstorms are usually pretty isolated. EG we got almost a half inch of rain, strong winds, thunder and lightening Sunday night in Edison. Talking talking to others down at dock, the Bayshore area didn’t get a drop.
Also good to have apps like Radar Now to track the storms in real time on your phone.

Thanks for the reports Gerry. Glad you’re getting into some fish and good to know I’ve got some options other than always steaming 20 miles every time. Keep up the good work.

Yep when all you have is a few hours to fish or the conditions in the ocean aren’t great, the bay is a nice option to have. It’s easier on fuel and bucktails too.
Just heard from a friend vacationing on LBI and he’s having a blast bucktailing Fluke in the surf. Funny how we think we need to take a long run and get away from land to catch fish….

Well that sux... Was out one time and we had a passing storm which we ignored. All of a sudden the hair our heads were literally standing straight up and there was a glowing orange yellow ball on the antenna base on the hardtop. Weirdest thing I ever saw and needless to say we got the heck out of there...

You'll be happy to know the "Cleanest Cooler in the Fleet" is still in service and clean as ever...
