I see PB's going out for Chub Mackerel and people are keeping them. Are they good eating fish?

Fun to catch on light tackle as they put up a good account for themselves.
I know a few people who keep them for strip bait for fluke and chunk bait for bluefish. Don’t know anyone who keeps them for the table.

Used them as bait for sand tiger sharks last year. They seem to like them! Fun to catch but the novelty wears off after the 100th one LOL!

They are delicious broiled...they also have them canned in the supermarket. I like it better than canned tuna. If they ever have it fresh at a sushi house, try it - very flavorful without being strong but it has to be fresh.

The consensus is they taste like False Albacore (yuk) to they are delicious. Wow! Only one way to find out I guess!

Just giving my opinion and you what that’s like. Everyone’s got one ….yada yada
To each his own. Peeps eat false albies, smooth and spiny dogs, banana cod etc and like em.
I’m a diva. I love seafood but if I have to prep it to no end then f&ck it, I’ll pass.
That being said….chubs (to me) taste like s$it. Honestly, I think the tourist crowd is catching like crazy. Having a great time and bringing these fish home to find out they suck.

Like a lot of other strong tasting, oily fish.. Broil them with lots of seasoning, rend off all the nasty tasting fatty dark meat, and eat in small portions... I can deal with strong tasting salt water fish, but it wears out its welcome pretty quick... Not the kind of fish you would base a memorable seafood meal around... As stated elsewhere, if you have to jump through hoops and stand on your head to make it decent to eat, why bother?...

Chub Mackeral are different than Atlantic Mackeral, different color meat. Heard they are good but haven’t tried one myself. Fun to catch though on the light gear

They taste nothing like atlantic mackeral. It's f'n cat food. I'm sure it's nutrient and calorie dense, but no way am I eating it unless it's zombie apocalypse time. Mush mackeral lol... like a false albie.
There's no way in hell to make either palatable unless you're turning it into a saltlick with seasoning and even then, ugh... the brutal exhale

Atlantic mackerel are gone now. Where did they go? North? Global warming? Used to catch tons of them in the winter in barnaget

It nowhere near as bad as false albacore and all the stores carry canned jack mackerel. They don’t sell the former. https://www.instacart.com/landing?product_id=94859&retailer_id=205®ion_id=52910517963.00000&mrid=115840673&utm_source=instacart_bing&utm_medium=sem_shopping&utm_campaign=ad_demand_shopping_food_ny_nyc_bing&utm_content=accountid-146005746_campaignid-367540450_adgroupid-1220458301812556_device-m&utm_term=matchtype-e_keyword-_targetid-pla-4586475320224999_locationid-&msclkid=bf80ede8c3c519d40bc1894aecbe51a2

I have a feeling that canning is probably the best use for these fish... Atlantics weren't too bad when they were around, but again, you would tire of eating them really fast, they don't freeze well at all, unless you want to eat putrid fertilizer.. Guys would catch them by the burlap sack full, try and give a few away, eat a few and then the rest went into the garbage/garden or were frozen for bait.. I recall back in the 70's and 80's, one of the best baits for winter whiting and ling fishing was plain old frozen Mackerel. These chub macks would probably be good bait for Ling, but really how many do you need?... Might also be a decent Bluefish bait when chummed/chunked, IF you used them while fresh..

Boston Macks are delicious but are otherwise known as Atlantic Mackerel.
The top loin of the chubb mack is decent. I do eat it broiled. I quite like it. But it is fishy but it is extremely nutrient rich with alot of omega 3. One thing that needs to be done is that they need to be bled immediately faced down, and kept fresh and cool and eaten within a day or 2 of harvest. Make sure you cut away those dark blood lines.
They are not freezer worthy for human consumption but they make great Tile bait! Really fantastic tile bait! And if i catch alot my pets love the fish.
