I think I understand the mindset that capt Ron is having a bit of fun with...Watch some of the videos of the guys fishing out of the carolinas or Virginia down south, or even Mass or RI further north... Guys enjoying incredible fishing ,sometimes even massive blitzes without another boat in sight, or maybe one or two in the distance.. In the NY/NJ metroplex, as soon as the word gets out of a few fish being caught in a specific location, it is instantly mugged by hundreds and hundreds of boats of all sizes... The population density in the 5 boroughs of NY , the cities and suburbs of NJ, not to mention Philly and its suburbs is unlike any other salt water fishing area in the country except maybe southern california, which has practically shut fishing down in the modern age... I guess some guys just feel they are "protecting their livelihoods".. Tough situation,, Just so much pressure out there on the salt water fishery.. Lets face reality, NY and NJ now allow more fresh water fish to be taken than saltwater fish ... Fluke season, you can practically walk from Sandy Hook to Queens by stepping hull to hull in the the mosquito fleet..

No, not at all getting into the “there are less fishermen than ever before” thing at all. What I’m asking is when was the last time you’ve seen boats “that you can walk from Sandy Hook to Queens” happen ?

Not trying to be confrontational at all. What I’m asking is when ya comment about boats being “stacked” from the Hook out east is totally inaccurate

Boat traffic was absurd this past fall during the striper run. That said, fall striper fishing is only about following the birds so blurring out backgrounds doesn’t matter as much.

NOW THAT’S FUNNY!! I always chuckle at those blurred out pics, what are the chances the fish will be in the same location 1 or 2 days later after somebody sees the posted pics!

I had people charter my boat to get my GPS numbers in the spring. I put out the anchor off the Reach Channel and starting chunking. We put a beating on them. The charter asked why i stopped there??? I said because my fish finder lit up with be red dots! Why are they here he asked. I said i don't have a clue but they are migratory and full of spawn and will go up the Hudson to spawn. Next batch of "MIGRATORY" stripers will come from the ocean and stage in Raritan Bay before going up the Hudson also. I have no idea where they will stage but i will find them. For those of you complaining about the boat traffic you live in the best area in the world for stripers and Raritan Bay is the talk of the whole country. So I think you should count your blessings and just go fishing. :)

No matter where the fleet may be. There are other spots holding fish also. Most times a lot of boats in one area drive the bass down plus dealing with all the boats is no fun! And no I will not be blocking out the background any of my fish pics I'll just take pics of them on my ride home or at the barn! ;)

Last year the pictures of the Bluefin Tuna in front of the Statue of Liberty were spot burners LOL They were caught on the East side of the statue but you had to chunk real heavy??:)

I think you and any other captain has the right to be REAL pissed off if a customer records your numbers.. I know its a different world these days, and I am really old school/ dark ages, but I would have a real problem with that.. Maybe the captains of for hire boats should let their charters know beforehand that this will not be tolerated, and if it happens the boat would head back instantly, and the offenders would never be allowed back on.. For stripers its not as critical, as they are moving around, north and south, east and west, shallow and deep, staging, feeding, migrating, etc.. However, if a good cap puts his fares on a small but very productive and little known wreck or rockpile, and gets his numbers stolen, thats a big loss... Guy gives the numbers to a few of his buddies, fishes it himself,, and it can be cleaned out in short order... I would not blame any cap for getting pretty pissed at guys recording the good producing numbers he's collected over the years/decades... bob

Customers were told years ago no pocket GPS devices allowed. So how do you stop it? As far as i am concerned the Blackfish season starts too late but Spring and Summertime Seabass And Porgie spots can be stolen. One time years ago on the way in from a winter Blackfish trip at 17 Fathoms i saw so called "Blackfish Expert'' anchored up on a spot i already had the numbers of. I stopped my boat thirty feet from him and pretended to punch in his Gps numbers. He went ballistic and i laughed my ass off and so did my charter because i told them before hand what i was going to do. We all had a good laugh. With all the modern technology you can get there numbers from a great distance away from they. You just put the cursors on them and poof!! Welcome to the new world of fishing.

I have never seen boat traffic like I saw last spring. I made the mistake of going on a party boat for stripers on May 1st, and you wouldve thought everyone who owned a boat got a note to create a floatilla from the shoal all the way back as far as you could see.
I think it's less about overall angler participation and more about:
1) regulations have killed the idea of a diverse fishery and instead, we're forced into mini-seasons to target specific fish. May 1st as the example - Blackfish closed the day prior, Fluke opened the next day and the Sea Bass opener was 2 weeks away. If you wanted to saltwater fish that day...you had 1 choice.
2) Fish concentration. The spring ocean bite I grew up on has been non-existent the past couple of years, everyone is one single body of water targeting this fish and driving from every direction to get on them.
