We shoved off at three pm to some of the best weather that we have had this season headed to the same area that we have been fishing. We were greeted to a boat show in both sides of the canyon. Capt. Mike found a spot to drift that wasn't too crowded. Grandson counted 64 boats on our side of the canyon. We managed to catch a few Squid as we slowly drifted. Had one fish break off with no other runoffs. Capt. Mike made a move to the edge of the fleet. We drifted slowly along with the small boats enveloping us. We landed two smaller Yellowfin in the first hour. The bite started with 1-4 on at a time. The smaller fish were squirrelly and made some amazing tangles. We had around 30 Yellowfin between 25 and 80+lbs by 1:00am. Two boats were too close and I had to hold my tongue. The drift conditions were good so it was easy for them to drift along with us. One boat was at our stern within jig casting distance and the other was midship and in our slick. We caught fish from under their boat! Both boats hooked up while we fished through the bs. The boat at our stern was backing down on a good fish and went off chasing what ever it was. The other boat caught a couple of fish but not nearly as well as we were doing. We caught throughout early am and only needed 2 more Yellowfin for our customers limits at 6am. We put a few Longfin on the boat and Capt. Mike jigged a Yellowfin. We were limited out and headed for home a couple of hours early.
There were more smaller Yellowfin and we had a few bruisers that we landed. They ate everything with butters doing the most damage. We caught some Squid and caught some Yellowfin on them. Only one jig fish with a couple others lost. The Longfin at dawn were between 35-50lbs.

Great report Pete.
You guys seeing any swords this season? Seems like the YFT fishing is off the hook but not hearing of any bills being taken.

Not really a Sword area that we have been fishing. We have had customers fish for them but no runoffs. Had the one boat on our stern Friday night/ Saturday within 10ft of our balloon. One of the crew on the boat said "What the f?!k is that?" . I replied it's a Sword rig. You would think that they would move but noooo !!! Let's try and ruin the fishing for both of us. We got these fancy thrusters so let's see how close We can get before Ol Pedro becomes a screaming Berserker and tries to board us!!!
We heard radio chatter that some of the small boats were limited and heading to the tip/ 100 square to fish swords/eyeballs.

Sounds like someone should have a conversation with the captain and inform him/her that they expect a spot without anyone else fishing around them. Obviously the captain knew there were other boats in the area well before he got inline on the drift. Reports are great, really enjoy them, but the rant ? not so much....

Gumada,I'm the one that someone should have a conversation with. This is my opinion and mine alone. I don't speak for any one else. We had plenty of other boats that were near by with no trouble at all. It's not about crowds, that's a fact of life. It's about courtesy/edicate . Should you pull up in someone's chumslick and repeatedly set up on it? (Every time he did it we had to chum heavy to get them started again) Should you use your thrusters to stay so close that we could talk in a normal voice back and forth and pick up our sword balloon? Why not just drift past like the others did?
Sorry you don't like the rants of an old man. If you would like to continue this discussion please pm me. Tight lines , calm seas , and red decks !
