Originally was planning on fishing the beach from 5:30 PM until dark looking for false albacore, bonito & spanish mackerel but something came up that I needed to attend to during those hours so instead I opted to get in maybe my final shot at fluke this season. Arrived @ 2:30 just as the incoming tide was ending. Caught a pair of plump 16+” fluke on 2 out of my first 3 casts on live bait. Then nothing for the next 45 minutes. Tide was slow to turn (& even when it did there wasn’t much movement) so I decided to switch to a 3/8 ounce jighead/GULP Jerk Shad combo. Immediately put another fat 16+” er up and over. Few casts later had a nice 18.25”er that was followed by a micro which was followed up with a 17.3” slot keeper. Ended with another micro. Saw 4 other keepers (to 20”s) and 1 other slot brought up in the 2 hours I was there. Might give it one last chance for some fluke romance next Saturday.

Finding that the flatties have been thicker this season? From postage stamps to decent fish they all seem beefy.

Had a 23” last week that I didn’t weigh but swear coulda hit 5 lbs. dark side fillet was 1” thick. And stomach was completely empty.

I’ve been fishing the same area for the last 5+ years and have noticed that by mid/late August the fluke put on the feed bag & seemingly overnight get thick & plump. Even 10-12” fluke have some shoulders to them. Only ‘skinny’ fluke I caught the other day were the 2 micros.
