Just read the weather report for the rest of the week northeast wind twenty to twenty-five, every time we get this in September there, they go. Not looking good.

Very good chance the awesome fishing we have been having the last few weeks can be over with this storm .
Only time will tell , this week def looks like a washout .

I recall in past years that before the fluke head out they often pile up in the backwaters when the northeast blow comes. I've seen it time and time again in Keyport area where we go outside the hook looking for the last fluke and come back to find that guys are limiting out in rowboats, canoes and kyacks by the sailboats/keyport yacht club or even from the back of the boats in the marinas on the creek. Might have to go fish off the back of my brothers boat in Wagners later !

4-6 foot seas for a few days. This ain't no hurricane. Good fluking 'til the end of the month.

Well, it was a strong rain system and we will have E/NE winds for the next 4-5 days….but even if this signals the end, aren’t the fluke still around on the ocean side for another week or two?

I guess it depends on how many and how big you want the fluke to be... I have seen lots of them caught in november and even into december on pieces of green crab while blackfishing. Years ago we had great fluke fishing through october a lot of years back before there were season and bag limits even after nasty fall storm fronts. They don't all head for the hills after the first blow.. Matter of fact, decades ago one of the old party boat captains out of AH told my brother that a percentage of Fluke winter fairly close to shore in deep water channels and structure, thats why you seem them taken in small numbers almost into january on occasion, and there are always the odd one or two caught by early season Striper fishermen in march or early april.. Not 100% sure who the captain was or where he got his information outside of his own personal experience, but I have always believed his theory... bob

BB,

I am talking about the areas an in season fluke charter would fish off the beach. If anything, I would think this September easterly system would congregate the fluke on the hills and lumps a few miles off the beach?

It depends on the year, bait , all kinds of intangibles as well... The popular notion that a big nor easter drives fluke further off or even out is usually a safe bet, but its not always true... sometimes it will slow the fishing down a few days, and then they reappear for a while on the offshore hills, but i have seen storms in the past that just get them moving out of the bays and rivers, and there is still pretty good fishing right outside of inlets.. A lot of my experience was in years of high abundance decades ago of course, but this early in september, no fluke along the beaches, and close to shore where small boats can get them? Unless something big happens weather wise in the next few weeks, I bet there will be enough fluke around for the party and charter boats to be able to do ok until the season closes on the 27th..
