Had two YFTs East of you last Thursday on the troll. Prob in the 45/50 lb range. Porpoise and whales came up, feeding heavily just after sun-up around 630 am and a few mins later the port side bars got crushed. Two more came up on the starboard side but missed the stingers. That was it for the day... Pointed the bow to port around 11:45 am and was at the dock before 2 PM.
We jigged on a few nice bait balls with nothing to show for it aside from a few impaled sand eels on my hooks. Both tuna had guts PACKED with sand eels, mostly undigested. The stomachs were like tube socks full of fresh bait.

how small were he sandeels? the ones ours puked up were really small, maybe 2-3 inches. I thought about taking the main hook off the jig and putting a piece of rubber on a tuna bait hook about the size of one of the baits or something...

i'd say anywhere from 2 to 5". I just wish they'd set up like they did last year already. There was 12 to 13 boats where we fished and everyone slowly spread out after we landed our fish. No one on the radio said anything about hooking up and the mini fleet around the mammals and bait looked largely inactive while we got our fish to the gaff.
Fish ate a green chatterlure widetracker and a zucchini sterling chaos sidetracker... settling a wide open debate--they BOTH work LOL...

they are in one spot one week and gone the next... this spot wasn't good a few days after we caught there... I don't think there is an exact answer for you honestly.... just gotta talk to guys at the marina coming in with tuna and go out to that spot the next day or asap

Exactly. Until the fish set up on the sand eels steadily in a given area, it'll be run and gun finding them. I know a guy who hit 6 different areas in his center console 2 days ago--all the usual haunts they've popped up the last few years--finally found them and put 8 in the boat. He also burned a LOT of fuel...
