Hi all,
I’ve been looking into doing a camping trip with the kayak and blue mountain lake looks like a nice spot. Has anyone ever camped/fished it? Looking at google earth it looks good with a few islands to camp on and it’s about 5 hours from ocean county. If anyone has any experience with this or any other lake up that way and wouldn’t mind sharing your suggestions I’d appreciate it…..thanks!

Not familiar with Blue Mountain but if your looking for a kayak, camping and fishing adventure check out 1000 Islands NY. Plenty of state and private campgrounds in the area, some of which are on Islands. Smallmouth fishing is amazing and the crystal clear waters are full of all sorts of. structure. Although it’s a huge body of water there a lot of protected areas and a paddlers paradise.

Dude check in at recreation.gov to make sure you can camp there. It’s a beautiful spot and I would hate to see you get kicked out for relaxing and enjoying life. There’s lots of different rules within the park. You can even call there office and ask if this allowed. Good luck and let me know what happens. :D

Thanks Eddie, good call on checking in first. I appreciate the advice. I’m planning a trip for end of august/early September. Hopefully I’ll have something good to report. Looking at google earth, it looks like there are some private homes on some of the islands. Pretty sure they aren't into people camping in their backyards….but it would be cool if I forgot something..haha…thanks again

If you're in the Blue Mountain Lake area check out Durant Lake nearby. Last week had largemouth to 22" (all tight to cover) and Tiger Musky to 24", though most of the tigers just bit off my jig and kept going. There are some shore line camping spots that I think are first-come, but best to check as has been mentioned.

Thanks blindalfred, I’ll bring some heavier leader material when I head up there.

I've been to Blue Mountain Lake and that area several times in the past. Very beautiful but tough to fish. Lake is loaded with all of the usual trout suspects and LL salmon. However, the sudden depth changes while helpful for locating fish, make it tough to troll deep as it can go from 50 ft to 10 ft of water quite rapidly. I also fish from a kayak. Not a small body of water either. I don't know of any camping spots that are right on the shore. More like cabins and cabanas with amenities for rent and all filled up this time of year. Durant is shallow and weedy but would be easier fishing once you get out there, not practical to fish from shore. Local knowledge is key, so many little holes and small ponds, need to look at a map.

Thanks for the info krocks, I’ll keep Durant in mind, seems like it might be easier to camp there. I’ve been looking at google earth a lot and it’s amazing how many good looking spots are in the Adirondacks. That area is about 4 1/2 hours from me, so worst case if I can’t find a place to camp I could always just drive back home.
Thanks for all the suggestions

Another place to check out would be in the Schroon lake area. about 30 miles north of lake George. Check out Eagle lake Camp grounds, pretty sure there are campground on the Schroon river and also Paradox lake. Small boat access close to there is a small remote lake in case wind is a problem..Not sure of the name but Indian lake rings my bell LOl Good luck.

Eagle Point Campground on Schroon is great if you can get a spot and between the Municipal Launch, Eagle Point and the Horicon Boat Launch you can easily cover the whole lake in a kayak. There are some big Northerns around the weeds and nice smallmouth off of Schroon Manor (also has camping). Paradox Lake, and a little farther NE, Eagle Lake have their spots. Don't miss Paradox Brewery if you like beer. New Jersey people own the place.

Thanks for all the great info everyone, I really appreciate it. Can’t wait to head up there. I’ve been wanting to fish/camp the Adirondacks for a long long time, this is the year for sure. I’m doing a camping trip to round valley in 2 weeks. I’ve camped there before but I had a 16’ boat. This is the first time I’ll be doing it from a kayak, so I have to pack smart. Thanks again everyone!
