When the people who control and decide our fisheries managment have no idea what is the best fisheries management plan until the very last minute you know they have no idea what they are doing!

They go into default mode.. Its really just a simple procedural matter-

Shorter Season
Smaller Bag
Larger minimum size

problems resolved!

see now, how easy that was?... geez, you guys really over complicate things!

Too true. Just assume the worst and no one will consider your reckless. Right?

Everyone says follow the science, science is proof ,regulations that are arrived at not based in science are nothing but conjecture and unfortunately seem to be sold to the highest bidder in my personal opinion.

I will NEVER, in my life, no matter how hard I try, and how long I study and think about the issue, be able to understand ANY wildlife management system that espouses harvesting ONLY the breeding females, and not the far more numerous and smaller males... Thats a viable system of course, when you are trying to REDUCE the numbers of a species!!!!.. Why can't these blockheads understand that???.. WHAT are they thinking???..

Yeah, lets let anglers take the larger breeding females only.. makes perfect sense.

Unless it is deer! Kill the females to reduce the population???

The rec guy's are certainly getting screwed and have been for a long time now. I believe in fair regulations but as others said here on this post what they are doing with Fluke makes no sense at all. I'm almost willing to bet with the current regulations on Fluke and the keeping mostly all females it will just be a mater of time before they close the season all together. Of coarse none of this will impact the commercial sector. It will be business as usual!

Right,, up here in NY, deer populations go from high to insanely high... When it gets to the point that deer populations explode, and people get tired of ruining their cars by hitting them, Albany encourages hunters by greatly increasing the harvest of does to REDUCE the population.. Yet fisheries ""managers"" think killing the 18 + inch potentially breeding females is the way to increase the population... Yeah, makes sense to me...

That’s the whole point! Collapse the stock so they can justify closing the fishery for many years bankrupting party/charter boats/tackle shops etc. while the commercial guys continue business as usual while greasing the pockets of their politicians!
If someone else can come up with a logical reason of why they would force the recreational angler to harvest all females while ignoring the science and research, then I am all ears!

My question is why isn't the ASA greasing the politicians pockets to protect their financial interests? None of this make sense or there is something going on that we are completely unaware of. Remember it's not about the fish. It's not about the fisherman. It's all about power and money! Now the sport and way of life that we love. Is at risk to say the least! Tight lines!

The logical reason is there is no logical reason!

Not that it's perfect but I think NJ for one has done a good job trying to get our Fluke size regulations down over time recognizing the issue of taking large females out of the population. For the first time ever there are slot options on the table which NJ fought for. Also remember it was not that log ago when we choose to go out of compliance when the feds were trying to force 19 inch regulations on us and we got that done.

Seem like a lot of folks take issue with the people involved on managing our fisheries at a state level and their frustration is misplaced on them. It's the feds that set regulations and the states are stuck with whatever is handed down by the feds. I know for a fact the NJ DEP staff and several members of the council worked really hard behind the scenes to get the feds to approve our current options to include a slot this year. Is it perfect, no but it certainly is a step in the right direction and it would not have happened without them.

Deer and many animals are tired of humans building highways and structures through their homes. If they could only shoot back. With climate change we all might be here a shorter time.
